I love Filmora. It is the perfect fit for me. I make simple yet professional social media videos with it, and for me and most everyday people, that is enough.

Pros

1. Video editing - it allows you to edit videos by adding effects, transitions, and titles.

2. Audio editing - it lets you adjust audio levels and add background music for your video.

3. Motion graphics - this feature allows you to create custom animations with the help of the built-in templates and assets library.

4. 3D animation - this feature enables users to animate their videos by using 3D objects and backgrounds from the library or importing their own 3D models into Filmora's interface.

Cons

I only have one thing I am a bit disappointed about, and that is the price. They have a tier system like many companies for their templates, effects, audio library, etc; the free, standard, and premium options. I use it for free and always have. However, since the premium and standard have some top-shelf stuff, the cost can add up after a while, so I avoid it and do just fine.

I use Filmora for both home videos and content which I create professionally for my gigs when freelancing. There is plenty of functionality to choose from and the possibilities of what I can do with my videos are endless. Filmora has made video editing a breeze, I can do it myself and I don't have to break the bank while I'm at it. I have so much control with Filmora.

Pros

Almost every single tool that I need to make a quality video, I am sure to find on Filmora. To start with, I like how it is very easy to import media from the device to the software for editing. I am able to add any audio or image to my video and sync them perfectly. I can combine or split different videos and I love how I can fade in or fade out audio. There is a myriad of transitions, tittles and subtitles which I can customize by applying and changing fonts or colors and I can also animate the same. It offers a wide range of effects which I can preview before applying making it easy for me to pick just the right one. Furthermore, I can add a custom logo, add text and animation which makes it more exciting. I found that texts are customizable by the use of colour grading tools for perfect matching and this makes my videos look more fun. Lastly, there are many options under which I can file my project.

Cons

In as much as there are a lot of video/picture editing features, I found the audio editing features to be a bit limited. It is also a bit difficult to access media which is uploaded to the cloud. I would say Filmora is easy to use however in my case I had to watch a few tutorials before I could start editing. Nevertheless, I was able to grasp the concept. Lastly, I have encountered an issue where the software lags or crashes and in the process takes away precious work and time put into it.

Pros

It has a very friendly interface that makes it easier to edit your first video, it has a large number of effects, filters, transitions and more tools so you can get a high-quality and professional video.

Cons

It can be a very heavy program, it can slow down certain teams, I would like it to have more tools for the audio section as effects since your options for audio are very scarce.

Pros

There is a vast library of presets and templates. Any beginner may easily make video content, as I have. The transitions and effects are pretty remarkable. Compared to my experience with video editing software, it saves much time.

Cons

Although this software has many advantages, several professional features are lacking. Even though they constantly provide new updates, some features have not yet been added.

A great program for editing videos

Aiming for a wider userbase than most video editors, Wondershare Filmora9 is easy enough for beginners to use (if they don't mind a bit of a learning curve), but powerful enough to keep more demanding users happy. The 'suitable for all levels of ability' label is bandied around quite a lot, but it's entirely appropriate here. It says a lot about the program that it's possible to sit down and create something without the need to turn to any sort of guide.

When you learn that you have the option of working with up to video track and audio tracks, it gives you an idea of what you might be able to achieve – and that's before you even delve into the titles, transitions, effects and screen elements that can be used to transform you video from ordinary to extraordinary. While there are a huge number of free video editors to choose from, Filmora9 shows what a difference parting with some money can make to quality. 

Wondershare offers three different plans for Filmora9. The annual plan costs a reasonable $ per year (about £30, AU$60, currently on sale, down from $), while the lifetime plan costs a one-off fee of $ (about £45, AU$90, down from $).

There's also the option of adding Filmstocks downloads for $ (about £8, AU$15) per month (and there is a one-month free trial), which gives you unlimited video effect downloaded. The final option is the Annual Bundle Plan which includes a year's access to Filmora and unlimited downloads from Filmstocks for $ per year (about about £75, AU$, down from $).

User experience

Anyone who's used a video editor will find Filmora9's interface to be very familiar – it has a very similar layout to many of its rivals, but has an indefinably more polished feel than others. The first step is to import media to work with, and there are numerous options here. as well as adding footage that's already on your computer, you can also pull content directly from a phone or camera, as well as from online resources such as Facebook. There's even a record option for grabbing footage from a webcam, or recording videos of on-screen action. 

Automated scene detection does the hard work of splitting up lengthy clips into more manageable, ready for you to add to the workspace, apply effects, and drag to different timelines. As well as a range of strikingly decent effects and transitions, there are also numerous Split Screen options for creating various elaborate picture-in-picture layouts. 

On-screen text, titles and onscreen elements (such as graphic overlays) are handled with equal aplomb, and it’s hard to find fault with what’s on offer. Completed projects can be saved in a variety of formats, burned to DVD, saved for specific devices, or upload directly to YouTube and Vimeo. 

When you're working with effects, you'll quickly realise that you need to download them in order to use them. You can do these on an as-required basis, or opt to download everything at once. IT is at this point you'll discover that Wondershare has chosen to host its 1GB Effect Pack on Google Drive, with 'Desmond' indicated as being the owner; while there's nothing inherently wrong with this, it is a little strange, and a little unprofessional.

But the results you can achieve with Filmora9 are far from unprofessional. It's worth taking the trial version of the program for a test drive, bearing in mind that anything you export will be watermarked. If you're impressed – as we think you will be – you can upgrade to the paid-for version and export a clean version of your creation.

I&#;ve put Wondershare Filmora through several tests designed to explore its range of video editing and exporting features and documented all of the results of the process with screenshots you&#;ll see throughout this review.

Detailed Review of Filmora

The software has a huge range of features, and since we don&#;t have room to talk about all of them we&#;re going to focus on the main points that make it worth your time &#; as well as point out a few issues that might get in your way.

The screenshots I used for this article were taken from the Windows version, but JP was testing the Mac version at the same time and included some comparison screenshots to show the differences in the user interface. He&#;ll also highlight any feature differences between the two platforms.

Editing Interface

The simplicity of its user interface is one of its most appealing features. The main section you&#;ll be working with is the timeline, which fills the bottom half of the screen and lets you manage all the different video clips, images, overlays and audio that will become your movie. It&#;s a simple drag and drop interface that allows you to quickly arrange, trim and edit your various media elements, and it makes composing your video a breeze.

More advanced editing options are easily accessed by double-clicking on the element you want to edit in the timeline, and you&#;re presented with many of the customizable elements related to that item.

Certain media types will then allow you to edit even more by clicking the &#;Advanced&#; button. The interface can sometimes get a bit confusing once you&#;ve dug this deep into the editing functions, but that&#;s only because there are so many options, not because it is poorly designed.

The only downsides to the interface are a couple of small but surprising ones that affect the track manager, where you add or remove tracks from your video timeline. It&#;s quite an odd design choice because instead of allowing you to right-click on tracks to add or remove them, you click &#;Add New Track&#; and then set the number of text and audio tracks you want &#; but removing them uses the same process. It&#;s not a big issue, but if you want to use tracks to help organize the various elements in your movie, you&#;re going to be unhappy to learn that Filmora limits you to three of each.

Finally, it&#;s impossible to rename your tracks, which can make it a bit confusing to find which item you want to edit among a range of similar media elements. It&#;s not a problem when you&#;re working on a simple video like the one I made for this Filmora review, but on a larger project, it would be all too easy to get lost in the timeline.

Media Importing

Filmora supports an impressive number of file formats as media sources, and importing from files from your hard drive into the Filmora media library is a snap. Unfortunately, the software starts to run into problems when you use the other methods of importing media. Importing from social media accounts such as Facebook, Instagram and Flickr should be a fast and easy way to get your existing videos and images into the program, but the process was too bugged to work for me at all beyond the sign-in phase, as you can see below.

Eventually, Filmora was able to begin retrieving my media from Facebook, but crashed completely while creating the list of thumbnails. Flickr and Instagram media importing never made it past the stage shown above. This may be due to a large number of photos in my account, but I cannot be sure as the only crash information was found in highly technical log files.

Searching the official website and even some careful Google sleuthing didn&#;t provide any solutions to this problem, so the only option, in this case, is to send a support ticket to the company and wait for a reply. They replied to me after about 12 hours, but they simply requested that I update to the latest version (which I was already using), and to send them the log files and an accompanying screenshot.

Unfortunately, it seems that this bug isn&#;t limited to the PC version of Filmora, as JP ran into a similar issue on his Macbook. He could connect to Facebook inside the app, but while it retrieved a list of his photos, it couldn&#;t retrieve the associated thumbnail images. This makes it more or less impossible to find the right images and videos to import into Filmora, or at the very least time-consuming and frustrating. Clearly, this feature needs a little bit more work before it&#;s a reliable part of the software.

Screen Recording

For those of you making on-screen software tutorial videos, this feature is going to be a major productivity booster. Instead of having to use a separate screen capture app to record your instructions, Filmora offers a built-in screen recording feature complete with audio, mouse click tracking and varying quality options. The resulting file gets imported directly into your media library to be quickly added to any project you&#;re working on, allowing you to streamline your recording process.

Video Effect Presets

Filmora includes a number of different free preset elements that you can include in your movies, and some of them are quite good. There are titles, credits sequences and lower third overlays as well as a range of filters, emojis and other elements that can be added to your movie with just a few clicks. Many of the presets can be fully customized and saved for later use, although some presets only allow you to customize certain parts of them such as fonts or masking.

If you&#;re not satisfied with the presets that are included with the software, you can visit the Filmora Effects Store directly from the program to find some new presets that are more to your liking.

This is a useful feature, but while they do occasionally offer some free preset packs, the paid packs are actually quite expensive &#; some as much as $30, which is a bit much for a program that only costs $60 originally.

Encoding and Exporting

There are a lot of different ways of encoding digital video, and Filmora can encode your videos in almost all of them. The encoding format, bit rate, resolution and audio formats can all be customized to meet your requirements, and you get a handy estimate of the final file size so that you&#;re not surprised when the encoding process is done. Some social media sites limit the file size of uploaded videos, so this will save you from spending hours encoding a 4K video that turns out to be over the limit.

The export process is easy to use and relatively fast, despite the fact that my graphics card was not supported by the program which prevented me from using the optional GPU acceleration feature (Source: Wondershare support). Most of the supported cards are several years old now, but if you have a computer new enough to include an unsupported card, it&#;s probably fast enough to handle video encoding quickly without needing to rely on help from the GPU.

One of the more useful export features of Filmora is the ability to export videos directly to Youtube, Vimeo, and Facebook, which is another great productivity booster for aspiring viral video stars. You also have the ability to burn DVDs directly from the program, although there is no support for Blu-Ray discs despite the fact that the program is perfectly capable of outputting HD and 4K videos, neither of which are compatible with DVDs.

For those of you looking for a more streamlined editing process, Filmora has a couple of extra modes that you can select when the program starts: Easy Mode, Instant Cutter, and Action Cam Tool. These are all designed to do specific jobs, and they are all quite easy to use.

Easy mode, as you might expect, is an extremely streamlined video creator intended for making animated slide shows or quickly combining several clips while automatically adding music, overlays and transitions between clips. Unfortunately, it&#;s almost a pointless addon because the main program itself is incredibly easy to use. Easy mode will do all the work for you, but it will almost certainly mangle your media along the way, so it&#;s better to just work in Full Feature Mode.

Instant Cutter and the Action Cam Tool are far more useful, but they really should be integrated into the main program instead of acting as standalone programs. They allow you to manipulate and merge individual video clips with customized speed settings, freeze frames, and image stabilization. They&#;re great features, but there is no good reason for their functionality not to be integrated into Full Feature Mode where you&#;ll do the majority of your editing, and switching back and forth between them can be time-consuming and frustrating.

Effectiveness: 4/5

Filmora does a great job of editing videos at the enthusiast and prosumer level, and despite some issues with its non-essential features such as media importing, GPU acceleration and disc burning, it&#;s quite effective at its primary tasks. For most users looking for a video editing program, Filmora will handle anything you can throw at it with ease, streamline your creation process and look good while doing it.

Price: 4/5

It is fairly competitively priced, but in order to get the most out of the program, you&#;re probably going to want to buy some of the add-on effects packs. These are a lot less reasonably priced, with some packs costing as much as $30 &#; half the price of the program itself. There are other video editors on the market that cost slightly more but provide a little more value for your dollar.

Ease of Use: 5/5

Ease of use is where this editing program really shines. Few video editing programs do such a good job of combining a rich feature set with a simple interface that doesn&#;t require an extensive training process. Within a few minutes of downloading and installing the program, you can be well on your way to making your first movie, especially if you&#;re already familiar with other video editing programs. Even if you&#;re not, the basics are easy to learn, and the Wondershare website has some great introductory training material.

Support: 3/5

Wondershare has been around for a long time, which makes the lack of support information available on their website a bit surprising. They have some good tutorials available on how to use the more basic features of the program, but there are no support forums for users to help each other, and the FAQ section of the site doesn&#;t provide very many answers. Confusingly, some of the support links within the program itself point to previous versions of the software, which can make it difficult to get the right answers to your questions.

If you find yourself in that spot, like I did when trying to set up social media importing, your only solution is to open a support ticket with the developers and wait for them to get back to you. I don&#;t know how much of a backlog they have in their support queue, but you may be waiting a while for a reply.

Filmora Alternatives

Camtasia is a very similar program to Filmora, but far more expensive. The primary difference in terms of features is that Camtasia doesn&#;t rely on presets to create most of its video effects, and instead allows you to create your own animations and presets without requiring a secondary effects program. Adobe Premiere Elements is the slightly less-powerful cousin of Adobe&#;s flagship video editor, but that makes it a better competitor to Filmora. A digital download of the software is available for both Windows and macOS, and while it&#;s not quite as easy to use as Filmora, it&#;s also quite a bit more powerful and feature-packed. PowerDirector is priced competitively and includes a much larger range of effects that can be used in your videos. It&#;s also the first video editing program to support degree VR videos, so if you&#;re looking to specialize in VR content this is a better choice than Filmora. If you&#;re looking for alternatives to the Mac version of Filmora, there&#;s always Apple&#;s iMovie app. It&#;s quite easy to use, it&#;s free and it has been in development for even longer than Filmora, so it&#;s worth a look. However, so check your macOS version before installing it.

The only downsides to the interface are a couple of small but surprising ones that affect the track manager, where you add or remove tracks from your video timeline. It&#;s quite an odd design choice because instead of allowing you to right-click on tracks to add or remove them, you click &#;Add New Track&#; and then set the number of text and audio tracks you want &#; but removing them uses the same process. It&#;s not a big issue, but if you want to use tracks to help organize the various elements in your movie, you&#;re going to be unhappy to learn that Filmora limits you to three of each.

Finally, it&#;s impossible to rename your tracks, which can make it a bit confusing to find which item you want to edit among a range of similar media elements. It&#;s not a problem when you&#;re working on a simple video like the one I made for this Filmora review, but on a larger project, it would be all too easy to get lost in the timeline.

Media Importing

Filmora supports an impressive number of file formats as media sources, and importing from files from your hard drive into the Filmora media library is a snap. Unfortunately, the software starts to run into problems when you use the other methods of importing media. Importing from social media accounts such as Facebook, Instagram and Flickr should be a fast and easy way to get your existing videos and images into the program, but the process was too bugged to work for me at all beyond the sign-in phase, as you can see below.

Eventually, Filmora was able to begin retrieving my media from Facebook, but crashed completely while creating the list of thumbnails. Flickr and Instagram media importing never made it past the stage shown above. This may be due to a large number of photos in my account, but I cannot be sure as the only crash information was found in highly technical log files.

Searching the official website and even some careful Google sleuthing didn&#;t provide any solutions to this problem, so the only option, in this case, is to send a support ticket to the company and wait for a reply. They replied to me after about 12 hours, but they simply requested that I update to the latest version (which I was already using), and to send them the log files and an accompanying screenshot.

Unfortunately, it seems that this bug isn&#;t limited to the PC version of Filmora, as JP ran into a similar issue on his Macbook. He could connect to Facebook inside the app, but while it retrieved a list of his photos, it couldn&#;t retrieve the associated thumbnail images. This makes it more or less impossible to find the right images and videos to import into Filmora, or at the very least time-consuming and frustrating. Clearly, this feature needs a little bit more work before it&#;s a reliable part of the software.

Screen Recording

For those of you making on-screen software tutorial videos, this feature is going to be a major productivity booster. Instead of having to use a separate screen capture app to record your instructions, Filmora offers a built-in screen recording feature complete with audio, mouse click tracking and varying quality options. The resulting file gets imported directly into your media library to be quickly added to any project you&#;re working on, allowing you to streamline your recording process.

Video Effect Presets

Filmora includes a number of different free preset elements that you can include in your movies, and some of them are quite good. There are titles, credits sequences and lower third overlays as well as a range of filters, emojis and other elements that can be added to your movie with just a few clicks. Many of the presets can be fully customized and saved for later use, although some presets only allow you to customize certain parts of them such as fonts or masking.

If you&#;re not satisfied with the presets that are included with the software, you can visit the Filmora Effects Store directly from the program to find some new presets that are more to your liking.

This is a useful feature, but while they do occasionally offer some free preset packs, the paid packs are actually quite expensive &#; some as much as $30, which is a bit much for a program that only costs $60 originally.

Encoding and Exporting

There are a lot of different ways of encoding digital video, and Filmora can encode your videos in almost all of them. The encoding format, bit rate, resolution and audio formats can all be customized to meet your requirements, and you get a handy estimate of the final file size so that you&#;re not surprised when the encoding process is done. Some social media sites limit the file size of uploaded videos, so this will save you from spending hours encoding a 4K video that turns out to be over the limit.

The export process is easy to use and relatively fast, despite the fact that my graphics card was not supported by the program which prevented me from using the optional GPU acceleration feature (Source: Wondershare support). Most of the supported cards are several years old now, but if you have a computer new enough to include an unsupported card, it&#;s probably fast enough to handle video encoding quickly without needing to rely on help from the GPU.

One of the more useful export features of Filmora is the ability to export videos directly to Youtube, Vimeo, and Facebook, which is another great productivity booster for aspiring viral video stars. You also have the ability to burn DVDs directly from the program, although there is no support for Blu-Ray discs despite the fact that the program is perfectly capable of outputting HD and 4K videos, neither of which are compatible with DVDs.

For those of you looking for a more streamlined editing process, Filmora has a couple of extra modes that you can select when the program starts: Easy Mode, Instant Cutter, and Action Cam Tool. These are all designed to do specific jobs, and they are all quite easy to use.

Easy mode, as you might expect, is an extremely streamlined video creator intended for making animated slide shows or quickly combining several clips while automatically adding music, overlays and transitions between clips. Unfortunately, it&#;s almost a pointless addon because the main program itself is incredibly easy to use. Easy mode will do all the work for you, but it will almost certainly mangle your media along the way, so it&#;s better to just work in Full Feature Mode.

Instant Cutter and the Action Cam Tool are far more useful, but they really should be integrated into the main program instead of acting as standalone programs. They allow you to manipulate and merge individual video clips with customized speed settings, freeze frames, and image stabilization. They&#;re great features, but there is no good reason for their functionality not to be integrated into Full Feature Mode where you&#;ll do the majority of your editing, and switching back and forth between them can be time-consuming and frustrating.

Filmora does a great job of editing videos at the enthusiast and prosumer level, and despite some issues with its non-essential features such as media importing, GPU acceleration and disc burning, it&#;s quite effective at its primary tasks. For most users looking for a video editing program, Filmora will handle anything you can throw at it with ease, streamline your creation process and look good while doing it.

It is fairly competitively priced, but in order to get the most out of the program, you&#;re probably going to want to buy some of the add-on effects packs. These are a lot less reasonably priced, with some packs costing as much as $30 &#; half the price of the program itself. There are other video editors on the market that cost slightly more but provide a little more value for your dollar.

Ease of use is where this editing program really shines. Few video editing programs do such a good job of combining a rich feature set with a simple interface that doesn&#;t require an extensive training process. Within a few minutes of downloading and installing the program, you can be well on your way to making your first movie, especially if you&#;re already familiar with other video editing programs. Even if you&#;re not, the basics are easy to learn, and the Wondershare website has some great introductory training material.

Wondershare has been around for a long time, which makes the lack of support information available on their website a bit surprising. They have some good tutorials available on how to use the more basic features of the program, but there are no support forums for users to help each other, and the FAQ section of the site doesn&#;t provide very many answers. Confusingly, some of the support links within the program itself point to previous versions of the software, which can make it difficult to get the right answers to your questions.

If you find yourself in that spot, like I did when trying to set up social media importing, your only solution is to open a support ticket with the developers and wait for them to get back to you. I don&#;t know how much of a backlog they have in their support queue, but you may be waiting a while for a reply.

Filmora Alternatives

Camtasia is a very similar program to Filmora, but far more expensive. The primary difference in terms of features is that Camtasia doesn&#;t rely on presets to create most of its video effects, and instead allows you to create your own animations and presets without requiring a secondary effects program. Adobe Premiere Elements is the slightly less-powerful cousin of Adobe&#;s flagship video editor, but that makes it a better competitor to Filmora. A digital download of the software is available for both Windows and macOS, and while it&#;s not quite as easy to use as Filmora, it&#;s also quite a bit more powerful and feature-packed. PowerDirector is priced competitively and includes a much larger range of effects that can be used in your videos. It&#;s also the first video editing program to support degree VR videos, so if you&#;re looking to specialize in VR content this is a better choice than Filmora. If you&#;re looking for alternatives to the Mac version of Filmora, there&#;s always Apple&#;s iMovie app. It&#;s quite easy to use, it&#;s free and it has been in development for even longer than Filmora, so it&#;s worth a look. However, so check your macOS version before installing it.

Make a great quality video with Filmora

Comments:I use Filmora for both home videos and content which I create professionally for my gigs when freelancing. There is plenty of functionality to choose from and the possibilities of what I can do with my videos are endless. Filmora has made video editing a breeze, I can do it myself and I don't have to break the bank while I'm at it. I have so much control with Filmora.

Pros:

Almost every single tool that I need to make a quality video, I am sure to find on Filmora. To start with, I like how it is very easy to import media from the device to the software for editing. I am able to add any audio or image to my video and sync them perfectly. I can combine or split different videos and I love how I can fade in or fade out audio. There is a myriad of transitions, tittles and subtitles which I can customize by applying and changing fonts or colors and I can also animate the same. It offers a wide range of effects which I can preview before applying making it easy for me to pick just the right one. Furthermore, I can add a custom logo, add text and animation which makes it more exciting. I found that texts are customizable by the use of colour grading tools for perfect matching and this makes my videos look more fun. Lastly, there are many options under which I can file my project.

Cons:

In as much as there are a lot of video/picture editing features, I found the audio editing features to be a bit limited. It is also a bit difficult to access media which is uploaded to the cloud. I would say Filmora is easy to use however in my case I had to watch a few tutorials before I could start editing. Nevertheless, I was able to grasp the concept. Lastly, I have encountered an issue where the software lags or crashes and in the process takes away precious work and time put into it.

Wondershare’s Filmora offers the standard trimming, transitions, and overlays, along with effects we’ve come to expect in enthusiast-level video editing software. Since our last look, the company has added more advanced and modern features like those you find in more-established competitors—it now offers motion tracking, for example. Filmora can get the job done, and its interface is clear and pleasing, but you’ll have to do without some of the fine control you get with competitors.

How Much Does Filmora Cost?

Filmora offers a free trial download, which lets you export footage only 10 times and emblazons a Filmora logo on your exported projects. When you're ready to pay, Filmora offers a subscription model (as Adobe does for Premiere Pro). For a bit more, however, you can get a permanent license. Both the macOS and Windows versions cost $ per year or $ for an outright purchase (note these prices are frequently discounted). That's less than you pay for market-leading Adobe Premiere Elements, at $, or for CyberLink PowerDirector Ultimate, at $ (with a $ per year subscription option). If Filmora meets your needs, it offers decent value.

Paying for either type of Filmora license gets you a bunch of effects to use in your video projects, removes watermarks, and adds 24/7 technical support. New effect collections are also added every month for subscription-paying customers. I primarily tested the Windows software, though I also ran Filmora on macOS for this review; the two versions are mostly the same.

The software, which is strong on support for old operating system versions, can run on Windows 7 through 10, or macOS to Support for the new Apple Silicon M1 processors is through Rosetta 2; while native support would be better, Filmora is ahead of Movavi in this respect, as the latter failed to run on my M1 MacBook Air in testing. Filmora took up MB on my test PC, which is in the midrange for this type of software. Adobe Premiere Pro takes up GB, while Movavi Video Editor Plus needs only MB.

Pleasing Interface

Filmora's Full Editor view resembles that of most video editing applications, with a three-panel layout for source content, video preview, and timeline across the bottom. It has a clean, simple, and dark interface, with non-skeuomorphic controls. You can switch between black and light-gray window borders, and the program respects your system dark or light mode setting. You can’t pull off panels, but you can full-screen the video preview and adjust the relative sizes of the panels.

When you start a project, you have a choice of Widescreen, Instagram (1x1), Portrait, Standard, or Cinema aspect ratios. From File > Project Settings, you can set a custom size if you like, as well as choosing the frame rate.

Important mode-switching buttons are always at the top left of the interface: Media, Audio, Titles, Transitions, Effects, Elements (graphics), and Split Screen. At the top right are buttons leading to tutorials, help, your account, the Save feature, the app's message center, and the ability to download more content from WonderShare FilmStock, such as effects, videos, photos, and audio.

You can easily shrink and expand the timeline with Ctrl-Mouse Wheel or move back and forth with Alt-Mouse Wheel. There’s a search bar for anything you have in the source panel, and clear Undo and Redo arrows. Buttons above the timeline offer Delete, Crop, Speed, Color, Green Screen, Motion Track, Keyframing, and Edit—the last of which opens a panel showing expandable entries for most of the previous ones.

The number of tracks looks limited at first, but whenever you add another video clip below your main one, another track is added so you can keep overlaying. As with the Connected Clips in Final Cut Pro, these added clips in new tracks move in sync with the main track above them. It's a great way to keep your effect overlays where you want them. PiP works easily, with WYSIWYG resizing handles in the preview.

The program enforces a magnetic timeline approach: Whenever you drag a clip onto the timeline, it snaps right to the previous clip, so there's never any empty space in the movie. Auto-Ripple is also on by default to keep your movie gap-free, but you can turn this off if you prefer. You can trim from the start or end of a clip, but the current-position line shows a scissors, letting easily split the current clip. There's no trimming in the source tray, however, so professionally trained editors may not feel at home. Also missing are advanced editing modes like slip, slide, and roll, but for consumers, that’s probably for the best.

A plus sign on each clip lets you easily add it to the timeline at the insertion point. In addition to the timeline view, there's a Storyboard view that simply shows clip thumbnails, with spots for transitions in between. Helpfully, tracks on the timeline show audio waveforms.

Instant Cutter

Instant Clutter is a tool you can use during clip import and is intended for use with large high-res content. It’s very simple, with but one purpose, as its name implies. You can drag multiple clips onto its window, but only if you've selected its Merge sub-mode. The Trim mode is just for trimming the ends of a single clip, and its interface doesn't even show more than one clip in the left-size source tray. You can Add Segments, which means creating a new clip based on your trimmed original, but you can't explicitly split a clip. For some test clips I got an error saying they weren't supported, however.

Plenty of Transitions

Filmora offers transitions, and now you can search for them by name as you can in PowerDirector and Adobe Premiere Elements. There are ten categories, including Basic, 3D, Ripple & Dissolve, Speed Blur, Warp, Lifestyle, Slideshow, Linear, Plain Shape, and Filmstock. You can designate those you use often as Favorites, for easy access. Filmora uses unusual schematic diagrams to show what the transitions do; most programs simply show a sample A to B animation.

When you add transitions either with the plus sign on the right side of its thumbnail, the program places it inside the edge of the clip—I find this odd, since you normally want the transition to span the current and next clip. Thankfully, you can do this easily by dragging the transition’s timeline entry with the mouse; it automatically snaps to the midpoint between clips. You can also edit the amount of time a transition spans by dragging its edge. Double-clicking a transition entry opens a panel where you can decide whether the transition is overlapped, prefixed, or postfixed to the clips.

Special Effects and Color Editing

As mentioned earlier, it's easy to create PiP (picture-in-picture) effects, and you can move and resize PiP windows right in the video preview by clicking on the appropriate timeline clip, dragging the crosshairs in the middle of the edges and corners. Chroma Key (aka green screen) worked very well and automatically for my test footage even with frizzy hair, which can often be difficult to mask.

The Effects panel includes 12 categories from Shake to Night Life to Instagram-Like, which uses familiar names like Amaro, Brannon, and Hefe. These can add drama to your video just as they to do still photos. Distortions like mirror and water ripple, as well as a set of light leak and film style overlays are also included. Nearly thirty LUT (lookup table) effects are included, many named after the movies and shows whose colors they emulate—Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and so on. Those who pay for the subscription version of Filmora get more effects and objects, including movie templates, and color filters.

The Motion Tracking tool works simply and fairly well. There aren’t a whole lot of settings in it, but that’s actually a refreshing change from the overstuffed collections of options the competition often includes. You draw a box around the object you want to track, hit Start Tracking, and then choose what you want to follow the track—a file of your own or a selection of mosaic blurs. Filmora does a good job tracking objects and people, and even displays a message saying the object you’re tracking must be visible the entire time. The mosaics aren’t placed on top of the track automatically, and it would be nice to be able to use text or graphics as well as the mosaic blurs.

The advanced Color options button above the timeline can open up either Color Correction or Color Match. The first offers presets (such as Warm, Vignette, Walking Dead) as well as adjustments like Exposure, Brightness, Contrast, Vibrance, and Saturation—all while displaying a live histogram. The control is impressive, though you don’t get the color wheels that more-advanced editors now have. Color Match was slightly counterintuitive, but I finally figured out that the Reference image’s color would be applied to the Current frame (along with its entire selected clip); the tool performed this operation convincingly.

I don't love the stabilization tool's stretchy rubber-band look, though it does show you how much of the edges of your content will be cropped out—the more severe the crop, the more stabilization. Filmora's tool works, but products like PowerDirector, Adobe Premiere Pro, Movavi, and Final Cut Pro X have more advanced and effective stabilization tools.

The Speed adjustment tool, once again, is simple and effective. I’m pleased to see that it also offers a Freeze Frame option. You simply tap its button above the timeline, choose Slow, Fast, Normal, or Reverse, and then the fraction for slow and a percent for fast. The time change is conveniently and clearly written at the top of the clip in the timeline. You can even combine reverse with a speedup. The freeze frame simply adds a 2 second still clip of the current frame.

Keyframing, new since my last look at the app, can only be used with position, rotation, scale, and opacity. It’s a good start, but some programs, like Pinnacle Studio, let you time pretty much any effect or transformation available with keyframes.

Text and Title Effects

Adding titles and text is a snap, and Filmora includes over well-designed text and title templates, some with cool animations. Even the highly designed title templates are editable right in the video preview window. If you want even more customization, the Advanced Text Edit dialog lets you change the animation, font, and color fill for your text.

One frill missing is PowerDirector's and Premiere Elements' ability to use video fill in your text characters, but you can use a photo, which is pretty cool. In addition to text, you can choose from a good selection of objects and shapes to overlay onto your movie.

Music and Audio

Filmora's Music section includes background tracks, which you can augment by adding your own music files. Included music is organized into categories like Young & Bright and Tender & Sentimental. But there's no auto-fitting capability like you get in Premiere Elements. A full audio mixer lets you adjust each track's volume and panning. Dragging the timeline's audio waveforms up and down makes it easy to duck audio. You can remove background noise and set ducking, but you don't get acoustic effects that simulate concert halls and other environments like those in PowerDirector.

Two newer tools marked beta, are Auto Normalization and Silence Detection. You do get a Denoise checkbox, but that's not as powerful as the audio tools in Adobe and CyberLink's products. On the plus side, one handy sound tool, a microphone button right below the video preview window, lets you easily record a voiceover.

Sharing and Output

Filmora offers most of the output options you could want, including AVI, FLV, HEVC, MKV, MOV, MP4, and WMV. There's even an animated GIF choice. When outputting to one of the many supported file formats, you can choose quality settings of Best, Better, and Good. There are also buttons for creating and uploading Facebook, YouTube, and Vimeo movies, as well as DVD burning. You don't, however, get DVD menu screens and chapters as you do with some other video editors. 4K is supported, as is the newer, more efficient H codec.

Performance

Filmora generally felt snappy on my test computers, but a couple times it stopped responding when I started exporting, and one export to Vimeo failed. I tested on a PC running bit Windows 10 Pro with a GHz Core i7 CPU, 16GB RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX with 4GB GDDR5 RAM. As with Corel VideoStudio, by default, GPU acceleration is not enabled. This is easy to change in the Settings menu, however.

To test render time, I create a movie consisting of four clips of mixed types (some p, some SD, some 4K) with a standard set of transitions, and render it to a p MPEG-4 clip at 15Mbps, H High Profile. The clip's audio is MPEG AAC Audio: Kbps.

For rendering the test movie, whose duration is just under five minutes, Filmora turned in an impressive time of (minutes:seconds). That was only a smidge behind Corel VideoStudio’s time of , slightly better than PowerDirector’s and Premiere Pro’s , and much better than Adobe Premiere Elements’ and Magix Movie Edit Pro’s

WonderShare Filmora on the Mac

The macOS version of Filmora is largely identical to the Windows version, though it adds a few more features, including Auto Reframe, which (similar to features that recently appeared in Final Cut and Premiere Pro) crops wide content to fit into social-post sizes, either the square Instagram format or the vertical phone view for “stories.”

To use Auto Reframe, you can start a new project or use its two-finger tap menu choice on a clip in the source panel. As with the similar tools from Adobe and Apple, my results were unconvincing when I tested this using footage from a football game. Auto Reframe failed to keep the action in the center, just as the other two had.

I was also unable to test the other major new feature, support for the soon-to-be-discontinued Touch Bar, since my Air lacks a Touch Bar and my previous MacBook Pro with one suffered a recent fatal hard drive error while running Final Cut.

On my performance test on the M1 Air, Filmora took (min:sec) for the same project that took on my Windows test PC. Of course, that’s not comparable. What is comparable is that the same project rendered in just 50 seconds in iMovie—that exemplifies the difference between a program that’s M1-native (iMovie) versus one that uses Apple’s Rosetta 2 translation engine to run existing apps. A Wondershare rep told me that a native version would be coming out in July

Filmora, or More?

Wondershare Filmora has an eye-soothing interface and offers lots of nifty effects, text tools, and filters along with basic video cutting and good output options. Enthusiast video editors should be fine with Filmora, and its rendering speed is among the best. Those who really dig into various effects like denoise and stabilization, however, will wish they'd spent a bit more for more-advanced software. Filmora is reasonably priced, but we still recommend our slightly more expensive Editors' Choice winners for enthusiast video editing software, Final Cut Pro, PowerDirector, and VideoStudio, because of their fuller toolsets, better effects, and more-extensive support for new techniques and formats.

Aiming for a wider userbase than most video editors, Wondershare Filmora9 is easy enough for beginners to use (if they don't mind a bit of a learning curve), but powerful enough to keep more demanding users happy. The 'suitable for all levels of ability' label is bandied around quite a lot, but it's entirely appropriate here. It says a lot about the program that it's possible to sit down and create something without the need to turn to any sort of guide.

When you learn that you have the option of working with up to video track and audio tracks, it gives you an idea of what you might be able to achieve – and that's before you even delve into the titles, transitions, effects and screen elements that can be used to transform you video from ordinary to extraordinary. While there are a huge number of free video editors to choose from, Filmora9 shows what a difference parting with some money can make to quality. 

Wondershare offers three different plans for Filmora9. The annual plan costs a reasonable $ per year (about £30, AU$60, currently on sale, down from $), while the lifetime plan costs a one-off fee of $ (about £45, AU$90, down from $).

Anyone who's used a video editor will find Filmora9's interface to be very familiar – it has a very similar layout to many of its rivals, but has an indefinably more polished feel than others. The first step is to import media to work with, and there are numerous options here. as well as adding footage that's already on your computer, you can also pull content directly from a phone or camera, as well as from online resources such as Facebook. There's even a record option for grabbing footage from a webcam, or recording videos of on-screen action. 

Automated scene detection does the hard work of splitting up lengthy clips into more manageable, ready for you to add to the workspace, apply effects, and drag to different timelines. As well as a range of strikingly decent effects and transitions, there are also numerous Split Screen options for creating various elaborate picture-in-picture layouts. 

On-screen text, titles and onscreen elements (such as graphic overlays) are handled with equal aplomb, and it’s hard to find fault with what’s on offer. Completed projects can be saved in a variety of formats, burned to DVD, saved for specific devices, or upload directly to YouTube and Vimeo. 

When you're working with effects, you'll quickly realise that you need to download them in order to use them. You can do these on an as-required basis, or opt to download everything at once. IT is at this point you'll discover that Wondershare has chosen to host its 1GB Effect Pack on Google Drive, with 'Desmond' indicated as being the owner; while there's nothing inherently wrong with this, it is a little strange, and a little unprofessional.

But the results you can achieve with Filmora9 are far from unprofessional. It's worth taking the trial version of the program for a test drive, bearing in mind that anything you export will be watermarked. If you're impressed – as we think you will be – you can upgrade to the paid-for version and export a clean version of your creation.

Detailed Review of Filmora

The software has a huge range of features, filmora price, and since we don&#;t have room to talk about all of them we&#;re going to focus on the main points that make it worth your time &#; as well as point out a few issues that might get in your way.

The screenshots I used for this article were taken from the Windows version, but JP was testing the Mac version at the same time and included some comparison screenshots to show the differences in the user interface. He&#;ll also highlight any feature differences between the two platforms.

Editing Interface

The simplicity of its user interface is one of its most appealing features, filmora price. The main section you&#;ll be working with is the timeline, filmora price, which fills the bottom half of the screen and lets you manage all the different video clips, images, overlays and audio that will become your movie. It&#;s a simple drag and drop interface that allows filmora price to quickly arrange, trim and edit your various media elements, and it makes composing your video a breeze.

Media Importing

Unfortunately, the software starts to run into problems when you use the other methods of importing media. Importing from social media accounts such as Facebook, Instagram and Flickr should be a fast and easy way to get your existing videos and images into the program, but the process was too bugged to work for me at all beyond the sign-in phase, as you can see below.

Eventually, Filmora was able to begin retrieving my media from Facebook, but crashed completely while creating the list of thumbnails. Flickr and Instagram media importing never made it past the stage shown above. This may be due to a large number of photos in my account, but I cannot be sure as the only crash information was found in highly technical log files.

Searching the official website and even some careful Google sleuthing didn&#;t provide any solutions to this problem, so the only option, in this case, is to send a support ticket to the company and wait for a reply, filmora price. They replied to me after about 12 hours, but they simply requested that I update to filmora price latest version (which I was filmora price using), and to send them the log files and an accompanying screenshot.

Unfortunately, it seems that this bug isn&#;t limited to the PC version of Filmora, as JP ran into a similar issue on his Macbook. This makes it more or less impossible to find the right images and videos to import into Filmora, or at the very least time-consuming and frustrating. If you&#;re not satisfied with the presets that are included with the software, you can visit the Filmora Effects Store directly from the program to find some new presets that are more to your liking.

This is a useful feature, but while they do occasionally offer some free preset packs, the paid packs are actually quite expensive &#; some as much as $30, which is a bit much for a program that only costs $60 originally.

Encoding and Exporting

There are a lot of different ways of encoding digital video, and Filmora can encode your videos in almost all of them. The encoding format, filmora price, bit rate, resolution and audio formats can all be customized to meet your requirements, and you get a handy estimate of the final file size so that you&#;re not surprised when the encoding process is done. Some social media sites limit the file size of uploaded videos, so this will save you from spending hours encoding a 4K video that turns out to be over the limit.

The export process is easy to use and relatively fast, despite the fact that my graphics card was not supported by the program which prevented me from using the optional GPU acceleration feature (Source: Wondershare support). Most of the supported cards are several years old now, but if you have a computer new enough to include an unsupported card, it&#;s probably fast enough to handle video encoding quickly without needing to rely on help from the GPU.

One of the more useful export features of Filmora is the ability to export videos directly to Youtube, Vimeo, and Facebook, which is another great productivity booster for aspiring viral video stars. You also have the ability to burn DVDs directly from the program, filmora price, although there is no support for Blu-Ray discs despite the fact that the program is perfectly capable of outputting HD and 4K videos, neither of which are compatible with DVDs.

For those of you looking for a more streamlined editing process, Filmora has a couple of extra modes that you can select when the program starts: Easy Mode, Instant Cutter, and Action Cam Tool. These are all designed to do specific jobs, and they are all quite easy to use.

They allow you to manipulate and merge individual video clips with customized speed settings, freeze frames, and image stabilization. They&#;re great features, but there is no good reason for their functionality not to be integrated into Full Feature Mode where you&#;ll do the majority of your editing, and switching back and forth between them can be time-consuming and frustrating.

Ease of use is where this editing program really shines. Few video editing programs do such a good job of combining a rich feature set with a simple interface that doesn&#;t require an extensive training process. Even if you&#;re not, the basics are easy to learn, and the Wondershare website has some great introductory training material.

I only have one thing I am a bit disappointed about, and that is the price. Filmora has made video editing a breeze, I can do it myself and I don't have to break the bank while I'm at it. I have so much control with Filmora.

Almost every single tool that I need to make a quality video, I am sure to find on Filmora. To start with, I like how it is very easy to import media from the device to the software for editing, filmora price. I am able to add any audio or image to my video and sync them perfectly.
