TextMaker

TextMaker is the SoftMaker Office’s answer to Microsoft Word. It has a similar design to MS Word, and it pretty much has all of the core functions you’ll need from any text editor. Thankfully, SoftMaker made TextMaker compatible with MS Word, so there’s no need to worry if you’ve been using Word primarily before switching to SoftMaker. 

TextMaker also comes with a spell-checker which supports over 75 languages, a word-counter, and a thesaurus. It also supports edit sharing and comments, as well as various design options.

PlanMaker

This is SoftMaker’s Excel equivalent, and SoftMaker is not only unconcerned about the comparison with MS Excel, but it also seems to be counting on it. PlanMaker’s best asset is its similarity to Excel. As with TextMaker, old MS Office users can boot up PlanMaker and be completely at home because Excel and PlanMaker have very little difference. Even though it is a paid product we have the possibility to test the suite for free for a period of 30 days, with which we can measure if it is good enough to pay for any of the subscriptions it offers us.

The suite has support for 32 and 64 bit architectures and also we have two main installers in .deb and .rpm format.

With them, all those derived from Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS and others will be able to install in just a couple of clicks or from the terminal.

The one missing component that restricts a greater uptake of SoftMaker is a simple email client. SoftMaker have dabbled in the past with Thunderbird and eM Client, but these were both fairly unwieldy and complicated.
May I suggest that you take a look at the excellent open source Claws Mail (or the earlier Sylpheed) and think about providing it for SoftMaker customers? If you add a simple csv import to Claws Mail and rebuild it as a SoftMaker tool you will have a wonderful, light, fast, robust email client which you could probably customise and recompile in an afternoon. This would make a HUGE difference to SoftMaker Office. Please, please, please do consider. We all need a proper 'SoftMaker' email client and the code is just sitting there waiting for you.

Other than that, everything seems fine. TextMaker remains, in my opinion as an author, the best word processor for writing books and large documents. It allows me to create chapter templates which are exactly what is needed, it is reasonably light, very fast, and I have always liked the inbuilt flatfile database. Perfect. PlanMaker does exactly what it should do and Presentations is all you need (although you could make it a more intuitive drawing programme). So, all we need is that elusive email client. Nothing fancy, just a POP / IMAP client with basic facilities. Claws Mail is a good first step - it works brilliantly, is fast and light. There are some good open source plugins for it which you could also consider. I would be happy to help you draw up a design spec, and also act as a beta tester for such an application. :D

Thunderbird powered by SoftMaker

Finally some good news from the Thunderbird front!!!!

In the last few weeks I was seriously considering dropping it. But the only viable alternative was eM Client, and in the end it still fell short of the features Thunderbird has. However, I&#;ll keep an eye on eM Client, it shows promise.

The latest Thunderbird update (v38 -> v45) broke several of my add-ons, some of which I consider essential to my usage of Thunderbird. So I&#;m still stuck with TB v x and will remain so for the foreseeable future, it seems, since I seriously doubt those add-ons are going to be updated for Thunderbird v 45 and beyond. I&#;ll try to find replacements, but I don&#;t hold much hope.

I&#;m also glad to hear that Softmaker is developing add-ons for Thunderbird. I only found one of them useful (Faster autocompletion of e-mail addresses), but it shows commitment from Softmaker towards Thunderbird&#;s development.
But the best news is that Softmaker will assign a full-time developer for Thunderbird. This was so badly needed. There was (is?) an open position at Mozilla for a &#;Thunderbird Architect&#; (www.abbottbuilders.com.au) that has remained unfilled for a long time. Hopefully Softmaker&#;s developer, together with the team of volunteers currently in charge of Thunderbird, can deliver a better future for TB.

I was also curious about the reasons Softmaker had for dropping eM Client as the default email program of their office suite and choosing Thunderbird instead. This is what I found at Softmaker&#;s forum:

&#;as far as I learned from the contributions of SoftMaker officials here and in the German forum, it was not the cost which made them replace eMClient, but the fact that it is developed and supported by another company which was not as responsive to bug reports and feature requests as expected. As you already remarked, SoftMaker has a high reputation and standard especially in customer relations and it seems they couldn&#;t get to terms with the emClient developers in this area. Once bitten, twice shy – I suppose they are not willing to repeat this experiment with another external company.
So, by appointing one of their own developers exclusively for Thunderbird improvements, add-ons and bug fixes, they hope to have more control over their mail client&#;

I always find it easier to just drag and drop the download link of the add-on from the browser (Firefox in my case) to Thunderbird&#;s add-on manager tab. Thunderbird recognizes it as a valid add-on and offers to install it, no need to download and save it as an intermediate step.
