How to install Windows 10 on a new PC using a USB drive

System requirements for running Windows 10 on your PC do not require you to have access to a powerful computer to get it up and running.

How to install Windows 10
To get the Windows installation files ready, you'll need a Windows computer that's already set up and connected to the internet. Once that's done, you'll move them to the new computer.
Preparing your installation files
1. Insert your 8 GB or larger USB drive. It doesn't need to be blank, but note that any content on the drive will be erased during the setup.
2. Open the Download Windows 10 website in a browser. There, scroll to the "Create Windows 10 installation media" option and click "Download tool now."
3. After the software downloads to your computer, run it and accept the license agreement.
4. On the "What do you want to do" page, click "Create installation media for another PC" and then click "Next" (unless you're planning on re-installing Windows on this same computer).
5. On the next page, you can customize the Windows 10 installation settings. If you don't want the defaults, clear the checkbox for "Use the recommended options for this PC" and then choose the language, edition, and architecture you want. When you're done, click "Next."
6. On the "Choose which media to use" page, choose to burn the image to a "USB flash drive." Click "Next."
7. Windows should automatically find the USB drive and select it. If you have more than one inserted in your PC, choose the right one, and then click "Next."
8. The installation files will be copied to your USB flash drive. This will take a while. When it's done, take the USB drive and insert it into the computer you want to install Windows onto.
Installing the files
1. You'll need to change the boot order so that the PC will recognize the USB drive. Start the computer and press the correct key to launch the UEFI or BIOS controls at startup — this is usually done by pressing F1, F2, Escape, or Delete as it starts.
2. When the startup menu appears, find the "boot" control menu and ensure your computer is configured to boot from USB. Then save the UEFI/BIOS and exit.
3. When the computer restarts, it should boot from the USB drive and automatically start the Windows 10 installation program. Now you can just follow the instructions to install Windows to your PC.
4. You'll need a license key to complete the Windows 10 setup, but you don't actually need it to get Windows up and running. If you don't have a key yet, you can postpone entering the key until after the files are installed.
In the meantime, Windows 10 will run in a limited state. Some features will be disabled, but the operating system is still completely usable. That will allow you time to purchase a Windows 10 key.

If you have a new computer, wiping out the current setup and doing a fresh installation is an excellent solution to deal with bloatware that comes preloaded with the original manufacturer image. This method allows you to decommission the device safely without giving away your files. Also, this is typically the approach you will use to install Windows 11 when replacing the hard drive.
If you have had the same configuration for a long time, this would be the preferred option to upgrade from an older version (such as Windows 10) while reducing the chances of issues during and after the process.
This guide will walk you through the complete process of doing a clean installation, whether you are setting up a new laptop or upgrading from Windows 10 or an older version.
How to prepare PC for clean install of Windows 11
A clean installation deletes everything on the target drive, which means that taking the necessary precautions to minimize the chances of issues and data loss is a must.
If you already have a backup of the computer and files, you have an activation key, or the current setup is already activated, or the device can start from a USB flash drive, and you disconnect non-essential peripherals, then you can skip this part to the bootable media creation and a clean install process.
Create backup
It's always recommended to have a recent system backup before proceeding with a clean installation to have a way to recover in case something goes wrong. Unless, of course, you do not have anything important you want to keep. (The backup process should be similar on Windows 11, 10, and )
Backup entire system
On Windows 11 or Windows 10, you can choose from many backup solutions. However, the easiest way to create a system backup is to use the legacy System Image Backup tool. The tool is also available for Windows and older versions.
Backup files to OneDrive
If you need to create a backup of your documents, pictures, and other important files, you can upload the data to OneDrive or another cloud storage service.
In the case of OneDrive, you can also use the backup settings page to sync your profile folders (Documents, Pictures, and Desktop) to the cloud automatically.
To configure OneDrive backup, use these steps:
- Click the OneDrive (cloud) button from the notification area.
- Click the Help & Settings menu from the top-right corner.

Confirm Windows 11 requirements
Although you may have a computer already running Windows 10, it does not necessarily mean it will run Windows Microsoft has increased the minimum hardware requirements to ensure security, performance, and stability.
Here are the minimum requirements to install Windows
- CPU: 1GHz or faster or System on a Chip (SoC) with two cores minimum.
- RAM: 4GB.
- Storage: 64GB or larger.

In addition to the requirements, the installation will also require an internet connection and a Microsoft account to complete the initial setup. These requirements apply to Windows 11 Home and Pro.
Manually compatibility check
To check the basic hardware specs, use these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Click on System.
- Click on About.
- Confirm the processor, memory, and system type.
- Quick note: The memory should be greater than 4GB, and the processor must be an Intel's 7th Get HQ, Core X, Xeon W, or 8th Gen or newer or an AMD Zen 2 or newer. You also have to make sure the computer can start from a USB flash drive. If this is not the case, you will need to change the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) on the motherboard. Also, if necessary, you can use these steps to enable TPM and Secure Boot.
Change boot order using UEFI
On devices already running Windows 11, 10, or , you can access the settings to change the boot order from within the desktop environment.
UEFI settings on Windows 11
To change the UEFI boot settings on Windows 11, use these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Click on System.
- Click the Recovery page on the right side.
- Under the "Recovery options" section, click the Restart now button for the "Advanced startup" setting.
- Click the Restart now button again.
- Click the Troubleshoot button.
- Click on Advanced options.
- Click the UEFI Firmware Settings option.
- Click the Restart button.
- While in the motherboard firmware settings, open the Boot page.
- Set the boot order to start from the USB flash drive with the Windows 11 installation files.
- Save the changes.
Once you complete the steps, the device will be able to start from the USB bootable media, and then you can proceed with the setup.

To change the UEFI boot settings on Windows 10, use these steps:
- Open Settings.

- (Optional) Enable the Secure Boot option (if applicable).
- Save the changes.
Once you complete the steps, the computer should be able to boot from the Windows 11 USB flash drive.
Disconnect non-essential peripherals
Peripherals connected to the computer can cause problems during the installation process. If you have non-essential peripherals (such as removable storage and other USB and Bluetooth devices, as well as printers, scanners, cameras, and others), it is a good idea to remove them.
During the clean installation, you only need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and internet connection. After the setup, you can reconnect the peripherals (one at a time) to ensure they do not cause any issues.
How to create USB for clean install of Windows 11
On Windows 11, you will need a USB bootable media to perform a clean installation, which you can easily create using many tools, including the Microsoft Media Creation Tool and Rufus.
Create Windows 11 USB with Media Creation Tool
To create an installation media using the Media Creation Tool, connect a USB flash drive of at least 8GB of space, and use these steps:
- Open the Windows 11 download page (opens in new tab).
- Under the "Create Windows 11 Installation Media" section, click the Download now button to save the file on the device.
- Double-click the MediaCreationToolWexe file to launch the tool.
- Click the Accept button to agree to the terms.
- (Optional) Clear the Use the recommended options for this PC option.
- Select the correct language and edition of Windows
- Click the Next button.
- Select the USB flash drive option.
- Click the Next button
- Select the USB flash drive. Quick tip: If the device is not in the list, click the "Refresh drive list" option to make it available.
- Click the Next button.
- Click the Finish button.
After you complete the steps, the application will download the files and create an installation media, which you can then use to boot the device and proceed with a fresh copy of Windows
Create Windows 11 USB with Rufus
You can also use the Rufus tool to create the installation media. Rufus is a free tool with many options to help you create a bootable media of Windows 11, 10, or faster. However, it's important to remember that it's a third-party option, which Microsoft does not support. As such, use it at your own risk.
To use Rufus to create a Windows 11 USB installer, connect a flash drive of at least 8GB of space, and then use these steps:
- Open the Rufus download page.
How to install Windows 10 using USB drive
You will need to change the boot order so that the PC will recognize the USB drive.

How to install Windows 11 on external Hard Drive? Bypass the requirements
If you are concerned whether Windows 11 will be a good fit for you, or your workplace, then I always recommend people to put Windows 11 into a test first. But, how are you going to test them, given that there's not an easy option to go back to Windows 10? Install it as a pendrive, right?
In this video, I am going to show you how to install Windows 11 on an external hard drive, bypass the requirements and run Windows 11 on your computer!
Can I run Windows 11 from an external hard drive?
Yes. Even if you don't meet the requirements, you can still run Windows 11 from your external hard drive, SSD or USB stick. Of course, if you run Windows 11 on an old hardware, it most likely won't have a USB Type-C port, or even a USB Given this, Windows 11 will be very slow at installation and even at launching programs. Despite that, it should be able to do simple tasks, such as browsing the web or sending emails easily without much delay.
Here are the requirements you will need to get to run Windows 11 on your machine:
- A Windows 10 (or ) computer.
- An external hard drive, SSD or USB stick with lots of storage (GB or more).
Windows 11 system requirements

It's also recommended that your computer meets some basic requirements in order to enjoy a better experience while using Windows

- An external SSD.
- A USB Type-C port on your computer.

How to install Windows 11 on an external hard drive? The steps
Now that we have looked at the system requirements, we are ready to dive in and install Windows 11 in you pendrive!
For this guide, I also have created a video which it may help you follow some of the steps if you get stuck!
How to download Windows 11?
Microsoft offers Windows 11 for free. Yes, that's right, just like with Windows You can use Windows 11 for as long as you like, however, unless you purchase a product key, you won't get the option to personalize Windows 11 and there will be a message at the bottom right of your screen saying "Activate Windows".
- Visit the official Microsoft Download Windows 11 page.
- Under the Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) section, on Select Download, choose Windows
- Click on the Download button.
- Choose a language of your preference under Select the product language and press on Confirm. I picked English International.
- Click on bit Windows Looks like bit is not yet available.
- Windows 11 now should begin to download. The ISO is about GB so it should take some time to finish.
Once the download is ready, we will need to download a tool which we are going to use to install Windows 11 on our external hard drive.
Windows 11 ISO to USB tool
For this purpose, we are going to use Rufus. Rufus is a tool which will allow us to burn the Windows 11 ISO to our external hard drive and later on to install Windows 11 on our pendrive.
- Download Rufus from the official Rufus website. Under the Download section, choose either Rufus or Rufus Portable.
- Rufus shouldn't need to be installed. It will immediately open once you double click on the downloaded .exe file.
- Connect your external hard drive if you haven't.
- Rufus should recognize your external hard drive *. In case it doesn't, click on "Show Advanced Options" and check the "Show USB Hard Drives" option.
- Under Boot Selection, select your Windows 11 ISO. If you can't find it, drag and drop it from the Downloads folder.
- Under the partition Scheme choose:
- GPT, if Windows 11 is to be run on a relatively new machine.
- MBR, if Windows 11 is to be run on an older machine.
In the worst case scenario, if Windows 11 doesn't install in your target computer, then you may re-create the USB installer drive with the other Partition Scheme option. Be sure to note down which Scheme option you have used.
- Under Target System, leave it as it is (should be UEFI (non CSM)).
- Going now to the Format Options, under the Volume label, type in "Windows 11", or any other title of your own preference.
- Under the File System, leave it as NTFS.
- Press the Start button to begin.
* You can recognize your USB stick by the letters (e.g D, E, F) if you have multiple options. If unsure, go toThis PCand your USB drive should show up there. If still unsure, disconnect (eject it first) and re-connect your USB stick and see what letter is used to identify it. To prevent any further confusion, disconnect all external storage devises from your computer and keep only your USB connected.
Rufus now should ask you which Windows 11 version you would like to install. If you have already purchased a product key, they be sure to select the Windows 11 version which corresponds to the product key version you have bought. If you haven't purchased the product key yet and you are thinking of getting it later, then choose the version that you are going to purchase the product key for. In my case, I will choose Windows 11 Home.
Rufus will need some time to burn the ISO onto your external hard drive. This could take a few minutes, depending on the nature of your external storage device and the connection of it with your computer.
How to boot from USB with Windows 11
Now that you have Windows 11 on your external hard drive or USB stick, it's time to boot your computer with it.
- Go to the start menu and Restart your computer.
- When the screen turns black, keep pressing the F11 key (if not the F11, it could be the F10 or F12 key).
- When the boot menu appears, use your arrow keys to select your external hard drive. Your external hard drive won't include SATA at the beginning of the label.
- Hit enter.
If you have connected your external hard drive with a USB port ( or ), then the loading speed will be noticeable slower. If it's extremely slow, then my advice would be to disconnect the SATA cables from your DVD/CD drive and connect them to your hard drive if it's an internal hard drive (or SSD). There are no changes to the behaviour of Windows during the installation. All you do is making Windows 11 run faster.
Windows 11 installation
Windows 11 should be booted and the installation screen should appear. The process from now and on is pretty straightforward. All you need to do is to setup the language, keyboard layout, Microsoft Account and some basic personalization options.
Once you have finished with the Windows 11 installation, then you may want to activate Windows.
How to activate Windows 11?
To activate Windows 11, you will need to get a product key. If you don't have a product key, then head over to the Microsoft Store and search for "Windows 11". Windows 11 should cost around $ USD.
The Windows 11 product key is a character code, that looks like this: PRODUCT KEY: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX, same length as the Windows 10 product key.
If you already have a product key:
- Click on the Start menu and go to Settings.
- On Settings go to System > Activation > Update Product > Change Product Key.
- Enter your product key.

Looking to run Windows on your Mac? There are a few different ways you can do it, each with its own pros and cons.
The best solution depends on what you want to use Windows for. Do you want to play video games? Need to use a specific Windows-based app? Or do you want a portable Windows system you can boot from any Mac?

1. Dual Boot macOS and Windows Using Boot Camp
Boot Camp is a built-in Mac utility you can use to install Windows. It partitions your hard drive into two sections, with Windows on one side and macOS on the other.
We call this a dual boot system, because you can boot into either macOS or Windows. But you can't use both operating systems at once, which means you need to reboot your Mac whenever you want to switch.
The upside is you get great performance on both operating systems because it only needs to run one at a time. In some cases, a Mac running Windows through Boot Camp is faster than a dedicated Windows computer.

I am installing it now and holy ****, where did they get an idea as bad as not allowing local accounts? Now I have to create a BS Microsoft account to avoid my account being on the machine, which is what I wanted to avoid in the first place. There are so many steps and so many complexity requirements, and I am never going to get this time back. And even when I'm done this, I'm going to have to deal with disabling Cortana and the ads in the Start menu.
Why can't we still use Windows XP!? It didn't come with ads or spyware and had almost no privacy issues, and somehow Microsoft was still profitable without resorting to these tactics.

You can create a Local account at the end of the installation process, though they do try to push you into a Microsoft Account. .
Disconnect from the Internet during the installation, then when asked to set up a network at the end of the installation, skip that step, when setting up the user profile, don;t provide an Email address. .

I forgot to mention, at the end of the instillation, when you see that Cortana page, at the bottom is a link 'Stop Listening, choose that option and Cortana will not load into Windows 10. .

How can I install a bootable Windows 10 to an external drive?
This should be simple, but I have been at it for over 12 hours and am no further forward.
The SSD on my laptop just died. It contains my Windows 10 partitions.
I have:
- a 10 year old laptop, also with Windows 10 (home edition), but only 4gB RAM, which makes everything I try excruciatingly slow
- an external 1tB chief architect home designer pro 2019 drive
- a 16gB USB stick
- a Windows 10 ISO
- a folder, created by MiniTools partition Wizard, that I can't figure out how to restore to the external drive
Tools like Rufus and Windows Media Installer don't recognize the external hard drive (maybe only USB sticks?).
How, given what I have, do I get Windows 10 installed on the external hard drive and make it bootable, so that I can use that until I get a new SSD installed (possibly instead of)?
Please note that I do not want to open my main laptop. I will leave that to the repair shop when/if I buy a new SSD.
[Update] given that the comments say that this is somewhere between very difficult and impossible to do, a I am open to jumping through hoops.
I forgot to mention that in addition to the SSD there is also another internal hard drive. For instance instance installing a Linux GRUB boot-loader to the remaining drive and having it boot into Windows on the external drive.
In the worst case, I could use a bootable Linux USB stick and GpartEd to create a new partition on the internal drive and install Windows to that, I guess
Any other suggestions?
