Reaper beats Free Activators - consider, that
One Small Clue has re-released the Poise drum sampler plugin as freeware. The instrument is available as a 32-bit and 64-bit VST plugin for compatible DAW software on Windows.
Poise was released back in 2011 with a $49 price tag. Marketed as a clutter-free drum sampler plugin, Poise was praised for its clean MPC-style control layout and unmatched workflow efficiency. You can now download it completely free of charge from the One Small Clue website and use it in your favorite DAW.

Back in 2011, many industry-standard sampler plugins offered more features compared to Poise, but none of them could match its simplicity. One Small Clue’s plugin provided all the core functionality required for drum programming and beat making in a DAW, without the burden of having to include every possible feature. It has been my go-to sampler for years, and I still use it from time to time, even though my main DAW (Studio One) has a splendid drum sampler named Impact.
Here’s a brief look at some of the best features you get with Poise. Yes, it’s a relatively simple drum sampler compared to something like Battery 4 or Xfer Nerve, but the included features are remarkably well-selected. Poise has sixteen drum pads, each capable of hosting up to eight samples. The samples can be triggered at the same time (great for layering), randomly, using round-robin, or by assigning velocity splits. When triggering all the samples at the same time, you can adjust a micro-delay to each sample to get a more natural-sounding “loose” effect.
Loading samples is super easy thanks to the built-in file browser and full drag-and-drop support. One brilliant feature is loading the next sample in the same directory by pressing the “N” key on your keyboard. Finding the right sample this way is much more comfortable, especially if you have a well-organized sample collection where each folder contains a specific type of drum sound.
Once a sample is loaded, you can assign a sample start and endpoint, reverse it, normalize it, and tweak its volume, pitch, stereo balance, and length. The samples can be modulated using pitch and volume envelopes, You can save the loaded samples and pad settings as Poise drum kits for later use. It’s also possible to include the sample files with the kit so that you can recall the same sounds on a different computer.
Poise doesn’t offer many built-in effects, but the basics are there. It has a multi-mode filter, a distortion effect, and a ring modulator. You can’t use multiple effects simultaneously. That said, each drum pad can be assigned to a different output channel. By doing so, you get full control over each drum pad in your DAW’s mixer, and it’s possible to apply any number of third-party effects.
From today’s perspective, the user interface is still looking nice and clean. One caveat is that the GUI isn’t resizable, so it might be too small to use on a 4K screen. It still looks good on a regular HD screen, though. The plugin comes with three different skins.
It’s worth noting that One Small Clue hasn’t issued an official announcement about the re-release. Regardless, Poise is definitely offered as a free download from their website. Simply download the installer from the product page and load it in your DAW. You don’t need to sign up for a user account, and there’s no software activation required.

If you want to get into recording guitar, you’ll need a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation).
There are a few different DAWs available today and each one can feel very different to use.
Not all DAWs are the same and the best DAW for guitar is one that fits your needs as a guitarist and the type of music you want to record. The best DAWs for recording guitar are Studio One, Logic Pro, Reaper, or Cubase.
Ableton Live is fantastic for guitarists wanting to use a DAW for live performances or jamming at home. FL Studio can be used for guitar, but best suits musicians creating loop or sample-based music.
In this guide, I will explain what to look for in a DAW so you can pick the right one for you.
I’ll also go through each of the best DAWs available today and which ones to avoid.

What to Look for in a DAW for Guitar
As mentioned above, not all DAWs are the same. While there are some features you expect to see in every DAW, there can be a massive difference between any two DAWs.
Here are a few things to consider when looking for a DAW for recording guitar.
Audio Editing Tools
When you’re recording guitar, you will want to have suitable audio editing tools that are easy to use.
All DAWs will have simple audio editing tools such as the ability to trim recordings, fade clips in/out, cut up recordings, etc.
Not all DAWs will go past the simple audio editing tools. Some DAWs such as Ableton Live and FL Studio are designed more for electronic music, so their audio editing tools aren’t the main focus.
As an example, the below screenshot shows the audio editing tools available in Studio One when I right-click any recorded clip:
It should be clear from the above screenshot how useful some of these audio editing tools are. You can easily cut, trim, fade, speed up, or transpose your recordings with a single click of the mouse.
The best DAW for guitar will give you a good range of audio editing tools to let you cut up, edit, and transform your recordings in any way you want.

While there are a lot of options here, the only audio editing tool listed is the ability to crop or reverse the clip.
There are almost no audio editing tools in Ableton Live because it was designed with live performance in mind instead of audio editing like other DAWs.
When you choose a DAW, make sure you choose one that has enough audio editing tools to suit your needs.
For some guitarists, simply being able to trim and cut clips is more than enough, while others may prefer deeper editing tools. Have a think about what is important to you.
Plugin Compatibility
There are many useful plugins you can use as a guitarist. Amp and effects modeling plugins such as AmpliTube 5, BIAS FX, or Line 6 Helix Native can provide you with studio-quality guitar tones.

A plugin allows you to use other effects and software within the DAW. In the below screenshot, I’ve loaded AmpliTube 5 into Studio One to use on a guitar track.
Plugins are great because they give you plenty of control and flexibility over your recordings. You can record a dry guitar signal, then use any amp or effects you like to dial in the perfect guitar tone.
The problem is that some DAWs have limited plugin compatibility.
A good example of a DAW with limited plugin compatibility is Pro Tools.
Pro Tools is a well-known DAW due to its long legacy as the top recording studio DAW. But it only works with its own plugin format: AAX (Avid Audio eXtension).
This means you can’t use VST or AU plugin formats without relying on a hack to force Pro Tools to use them.
It’s also important to check that the version of the DAW you buy will work with third-party plugins.
Most DAWs sell different version or editions such as ‘Lite’ or ‘Student’ editions. These stripped-down versions may not allow you to use plugins.
If you plan on using plugins in a DAW, check the formats compatible with the DAW and make sure you buy a version that allows you to use plugins.
As I go through the best DAWs for guitar later in this guide, I will mention the plugin formats each one can use.
Number of Tracks
Some DAWs sell stripped-down versions that limit the number of tracks you can use.
If you’re new to recording guitar, you might feel that 16 tracks are more than enough.
But if you buy one of these stripped-down versions, you’ll quickly discover how easy it is to reach those track limits.
Even if you will be recording songs that use an acoustic guitar and vocals, you might be surprised by how quickly you fill tracks up.
Look for a version of a DAW that gives you unlimited tracks.
Ease of Use
Every DAW has a learning curve as you figure out how to use the interface and find all of the tools and features.
The first time you open a DAW, you will probably be overwhelmed by the confusing interface.
Here is an example of how complicated DAWs can get:
While every DAW might seem intimidating at first, there are avid users for every DAW I will cover below and plenty of tutorials and guides to help you.
Some DAWs are easier to learn than others. The key to finding the right DAW for you is to make sure it matches the way you want to work on your recordings.
For example, if you plan on using a lot of loops or samples in your recordings, a DAW such as FL Studio is ideal because it was designed to make it easy to create loop and sample-based music.
If you plan on only recording live instruments, you may find it easier to learn to use a DAW designed mainly for audio such as Cubase or Studio One.
Before you commit to a DAW, try downloading a trial version so you can see what it’s like to use.
For years I used Cakewalk Sonar as my DAW of choice. It was clunky and hard to use. When Studio One came out, I immediately made the switch after trying the trial version and finding out how much easier it was to use.
Even if you’re already using a DAW now, it’s worth considering other options that may suit you better.
DAW ‘Editions’
Most DAWs offer different editions or versions with a big difference in features and cost. It can quickly get confusing when a DAW offers a few different versions at significantly different prices.
For example, here are the current prices (March 2022) of the three different Cubase versions you can buy:
As you can see, there is a massive difference in price between the three versions. So which one should you get?
While each DAW’s website will have a comparison table to show you the features you get in each version, it can be tough to figure out which version is right for you.
Some editions limit the number of tracks you can use at once. Other versions may not allow third-party plugins. With some DAWs, the only main difference is how many effects and virtual instruments are included.
When you look through the DAWs covered below, be aware that I’ll be talking about the full versions of each DAW. If you buy one of these watered-down versions, make sure you know what features will be missing and that you’re sure you won’t need them.
USB dongles
Most DAWs will ask you to enter an activation code to register your purchase. Others require you to log in every time you use your DAW.
Some DAWs require you to plug in a USB dongle to operate.
Fortunately, most DAWs have moved away from this terrible approach, but some older versions may still use them.
One of my students bought Pro Tools a few years ago and while she had the required dongle plugged in, she could not get it to work. She spent weeks sending emails to support and eventually gave up.
If you plan on using a DAW across multiple computers, make sure you know whether you will be able to run the same DAW licence on them at the same time or not.
Best DAWs in 2022 for Guitar
Before I give my recommendations on the best DAW for guitarists in different situations (eg: beginners, live performers, etc.), let’s go through the most popular DAWs.
These are the best DAWs in 2022 you can use for guitar:
- Cubase
- Studio One
- Logic Pro X
- Ableton Live
- Pro Tools
- Reaper
- FL Studio
The above DAWs are in no particular order as I will explain my recommendations later.
Let’s go through each DAW so you can figure out if any of them suit your needs.
Steinberg Cubase
Cubase has been one of the most popular DAWs for audio recording and editing for many years. If you plan on mainly recording live instruments, it’s one of the top choices to consider.
Cubase is good for beginners as it is easy to understand while still providing a great range of tools.
Cubase is currently in version 12 and is a mature DAW that has been refined over the years. The layout has been refreshed over older versions and is now much easier to use.
Cubase Pros:
- Easy to use interface
- Compatible with 64-bit VST plugin format
- Excellent audio editing and recording tools
- Windows and Mac support
- Stripped-down versions (Artist and Elements) still provide decent features
Cubase Cons:
- USB-eLicenser required to use (Steinberg are currently working to phase this out)
- Full version (Cubase Pro) is quite expensive
- Not compatible with 32-bit plugins
Recommendation: Highly recommended. Cubase is one of the best DAWs for guitar due to great plugin compatibility and audio editing tools.
PreSonus Studio One
Studio One (currently in version 5) is a newer DAW compared to some of the other DAWs in this list.
I personally moved from Cakewalk Sonar to Studio One due to the excellent layout and easy-to-use tools.
Be aware that the stripped-down versions of Studio One don’t allow third-party VSTs, so you need to buy the full version to use popular plugins.
Compared to other DAWs such as Ableton Live, Reason or FL Studio, Studio One was designed for audio recording as the priority.
This means it provides you with an easy way to record guitar or other instruments without having to dig into weird menus and options.
Studio One Pros:
- Simple interface
- Excellent audio editing tools
- Compatible with VST plugins (only the full version)
Studio One Cons:
- The cheaper versions don’t allow third-party plugins
Recommendation: Highly recommended. Studio One is my DAW of choice as it uses a simple interface and has a great range of features.

Logic Pro X
Logic Pro X is the go-to DAW for Mac users. Unfortunately, I don’t have a Mac so I haven’t tried Logic Pro X.
If you do have a Mac, I highly recommend you try the trial version and compare it against the other DAWs in this guide.
An interesting feature Logic Pro X offers is the ‘Logic Remote’. This allows you to use an iOS device as a remote for your DAW.
Being able to use an iPad or iPhone to extend your DAW is an incredibly handy feature I’d love to see in other DAWs.
Recommendation: Recommended for Mac users. Logic Pro X is an extremely popular DAW because it is well designed and packs a good range of features.
Ableton Live
Ableton Live (currently in version 11) is very different from all of the other DAWs in this guide.
As the name suggests, it was designed for live performances in mind. When you open Ableton, the default view is the ‘session’ view. That should tell you how much focus it gives to live performances.
Whenever you see a laptop on stage during an electronic music concert, you can almost guarantee that they’re using Ableton.
This makes Ableton a fantastic DAW to use for live performances, but not ideal for recording and mixing songs as a guitarist.
I recommend Ableton as a DAW for guitarists who plan on using it for live performances. Combining Ableton Live with a guitar using a MIDI-pickup would be a powerful combination. Or if you want to incorporate plugins or complex loops into a performance, Ableton Live is worth checking out.
Ableton Pros:
- Great way to incorporate samples and loops into performances
- Great tool for songwriting or coming up with ideas
- Compatible with VST plugins
Ableton Cons:
- Lack of audio editing tools
- Not designed with guitarists in mind
Recommendation: Recommended for guitarists who want to use a DAW during live performances. Not recommended for purely recording and mixing songs.

Pro Tools
Pro Tools has been the industry standard for decades. For many years, Pro Tools was the only DAW worth considering for a recording studio. If a recording studio didn’t use Pro Tools, it wasn’t worth going to.
Times have changed and in many ways, Pro Tools has been left behind. Many people will disagree with this view, but it’s clear that other DAWs have made massive improvements over the last 10+ years.
While there are a lot of musicians who still believe Pro Tools is the best DAW today, it should not be the default choice for anybody.
A problem with Pro Tools is that many musicians have been using Pro Tools for decades, which means it’s hard for Pro Tools to make changes without annoying their loyal users.
This means Pro Tools is slow to make changes or they avoid innovations that make other DAWs so great to use. The reason Ableton Live is so popular today is that it tried something new. FL Studio is fantastic at what it does because it took a fresh approach. Studio One has created an incredible interface while the Pro Tools interface looks at least 15 years old.
Pro Tools isn’t going to take any chances in the future so it will never surprise you with new approaches or innovation.
The only innovation I’ve noticed recently is they now require subscriptions instead of letting you buy the software outright. As I worked on a tutorial on how to record guitar in Pro Tools, I found out how useful (sarcasm) this innovation really was when my internet temporarily went down and I was instantly kicked out of Pro Tools and completely lost my work.
Pro Tools Pros:
- Very mature software with excellent editing and mixing tools
- USB-dongle no longer required in latest Pro Tools version (used to be a big pain point for users)
Pro Tools Cons:
- Requires a subscription to use (can become expensive over time)
- Not compatible with VST plugins
- AVID (the company that run Pro Tools) has a patchy history of poor choices that negatively hurt users
Recommendation: Not recommended. While there are a lot of people who still rave about Pro Tools, it has been left far behind by other DAWs.
Check out this tutorial on how to record guitar in Pro Tools to see what it’s like to use. You may find that it suits you, but the chances are you’ll prefer one of the other DAWs in this guide.
The fact that Pro Tools doesn’t support VST plugins makes this a no-go for a lot of guitarists. You can use AAX plugins, but they’re nowhere as common as VST plugins.
Reaper
Reaper is a popular DAW with guitarists due to the very low cost, great community, and simple interface.
While other DAWs offer different versions with stripped-down features and a full version at a high cost, Reaper offers one version with all features intact at a low cost.
This makes Reaper a great option for guitarists who want to use a full-featured DAW but have a limited budget.
Reaper’s excellent interface and easy-to-understand layout make it easier to learn that some other DAWs.
One example of how Reaper is different from other DAWs is how it uses tracks. In other DAWs, you set up separate tracks for audio or MIDI.
In Reaper, any track can be used for audio or MIDI. You simply select the input you want to record from as shown below.
Once you learn how to use Reaper, it becomes clear how archaic some other DAWs like Pro Tools are.
When you consider Pro Tools costs $599 and Reaper costs $60, it becomes really hard to justify more expensive DAWs.
Reaper Pros:
- Very low price compared to other DAWs
- Great audio editing tools
- Easy-to-use interface
- Compatible with VST plugins
Reaper Cons:
- Haven’t come across any possible downsides yet in my testing
Recommendation: Highly recommended. Reaper is a fantastic DAW at a great price.

FL Studio
FL Studio started off as ‘FruityLoops’ in the late 90s. When it first came out, it was focused on loops and sample-based music.
FruityLoops gradually evolved until it became a full-featured DAW and was renamed to FL Studio.
While FL Studio is a full-featured DAW and can record and process audio recordings, it still has a lean towards electronic music creation.
When you open FL Studio, it looks completely different from other traditional DAWs:
Instead of a standard track-based view, you see a playlist arrangement where you can set up various patterns.
By default, FL Studio starts off with basic drum kit samples loaded so you can start programming drum beats.
This focus on patterns and loops may be enough to turn away some guitarists. But it is still worth considering depending on how you use it.
I absolutely love using FL Studio as a music creation tool rather than a purely recording tool.
You can easily record riffs and ideas, quickly put together drum tracks, and gradually piece together a song.
A quick search on YouTube shows how popular FL Studio is for song creation.
If you’re a songwriter, FL Studio is possibly the best DAW you can use to work on your song ideas and write music.
FL Studio Pros:
- Fantastic song creation tools
- Impressive range of effects and audio processing tools
- Compatible with VST plugins
FL Studio Cons:
- Very different from other DAWs and may not suit all guitarists
- Not as easy as other DAWs to record guitar
- Do not buy the ‘Fruity’ edition as it doesn’t offer audio recording
Recommendation: Recommended for guitarists who like the idea of using a DAW to come up with song ideas, create music, and experiment with different virtual instruments.

Best DAW for Beginners
The best DAW for beginners is Reaper. Reaper gives beginners a full-featured DAW at a very low price. Reaper is easy to use and has a fantastic interface.
Reaper’s learning curve is far more forgiving than other DAWs that have complex interfaces.
With Reaper, you simply double-click to create a track, select your input, click the button to arm the track and you’re ready to record.
If you’re a beginner and want to get started with recording, I don’t recommend buying one of the ‘Lite’ or stripped-down versions of other DAWs.
You’ll end up regretting buying a watered-down version.
If you’re on a budget, Reaper is the way to go.
Best DAW for Live Performance
The best DAW for live performance is Ableton Live. Ableton was designed specifically for live performances and the session view offers something that other DAWs can’t compete with for performances
As a guitarist, you can use Ableton as your entire guitar rig, or to trigger samples, loops, or effects as you like.
You could use a plugin such as AmpliTube 4, BIAS FX, or Line 6 Helix Native, then use a MIDI foot controller to control any aspect of your tone and effects during a performance.

You can even use a MIDI pickup on your guitar to use Ableton to create non-guitar sounds using virtual instruments. Find out about MIDI guitars in this guide.
If you like the idea of adding something unique to your live performances, I highly recommend experimenting with Ableton Live.
Best DAW for Home Studios
The best DAW for guitarists who want to have a full-featured home studio is Studio One, Logic Pro or Cubase. These DAWs provide you with fantastic audio editing tools and a simple interface.
I personally prefer Studio One, but every guitarist has different preferences. Reaper is also worth considering as your go-to home studio DAW.
Any of the main DAWs covered here will provide you with everything you need to record and edit full songs and use plugins as you like.
Best DAW for Simple Recordings
The best DAW for simple recordings is Reaper. Reaper gives you a simple way to record anything you need, but it also has all the features you may want in the future.
If you really only need something simple to record guitar or vocal parts, you may prefer using Audacity.
Audacity isn’t a DAW. It’s a free and very popular audio recording and editing program.
Using a DAW for simple recordings can be overkill and Audacity does a perfectly good job at giving you a simple way to record and edit your tracks.
Audacity does support VST plugins, so you can even use it with something like AmpliTube or BIAS FX to add effects to your recordings.

Best DAW for Songwriters
The best DAW for songwriters is FL Studio. FL Studio is designed around music creation and provides you with an impressive range of tools and ways to come up with song ideas and piece together a song.
While other DAWs may be better suited to recording songs using only real instruments, FL Studio is perfect for songwriters.
When I want to work on song ideas or experiment with some riffs, I use FL Studio. As a songwriting tool, it is a valuable resource that other DAWs can’t come close to.
In FL Studio, you can quickly and easily lay down a drum track to jam with, load some plugins, and start recording your ideas. Then you can easily piece your recordings together for jam tracks or songs.
I highly recommend FL Studio if you’re a songwriter and are looking for different ways to capture and work on your song ideas.
Control Any DAW With a Controller
If you’re new to recording guitar in a DAW, it can seem intimidating as you learn all of the different features and functions.
One way to make recording easier is to use a DAW controller. Sure, you can use a mouse and keyboard, but controllers give you a lot of flexibility.
DAW controllers come in all shapes and sizes with a variety of different features as shown below:
The basic idea with these controllers is that instead of using your keyboard and mouse to control the DAW, you can use a controller with dedicated buttons, knobs, sliders, and pads.
These controllers are handy when recording, editing, mixing, or recording virtual instrument parts. You can even use controllers to control settings within a plugin such as amp and effects settings.

A simple DAW controller can instantly make your recording setup feel more like a professional studio. It’s hard to emphasize how useful a few sliders, buttons or knobs can be when editing or recording.

The problem is with synth drums and grooves.
For acoustic I find Steven Slate Drums 5.5 very good, but I'm not sure about good drum free VSTis (with presets and libraries attached).

I'd never use my main email for any vendor that doesn't require my actual ID for credit card billing, especially since I don't want the constant emails. I've always created vendor accounts using a different email, with a nickname. That's been good enough for more free plugins over the years than I could count, and they can do whatever they want with the account. I thought everyone did it that way :) If I purchase software online I use my real info but not my main correspondence email, a "vendors and bills only" email instead.
I don't know why anyone would create an account that had stipulations with them, either because it's their main email or the account doesn't disappear when deleted, in order to glom free software.

They seemed to offer a nice service, and I used my main email because I wanted to get updates on my account. Turns out I was wrong. And if I had decided to buy something from them later, I would have had to create a second account which is annoying.

I have all of the free instruments and they're some of the most useful out there, if a bit resource heavy.
I have communicated with them (not about the free instruments) and they have always been excellent in responding. I just don't feel the level of blowback for anything a company does with a throwaway account after giving you free software. It's free software, and we don't have to download it. I always assume they're trading the software for the info.

Bitsonic Keyzone someone mentioned. Downloading was weird. The yamaha and steinway are incredibly well sampled, no noise or artifacts that I can tell so far, nice stereo image. The reverb is pretty good and matches the pianos. The Rhodes is great too, but the reverb doesn't go as well with the rhodes. I just use dry and send to Reaverb

Thanks I’ll have to check out piano one. So far I’m very impressed with the sound of the hammers on the lightly touched high notes on keyzone, and it’s pretty simple plugin with brain dead UI. Also it sounds like the samples were recorded very cleanly in good environment and gain staging yet the piano doesn’t sound tuned to absolute perfection, so maybe that’s what I like. I don’t like that reverb is on by default though, I hate that with all VI’s though so no surprise there.

Kontakt features scriptabuility, tons of audio modifiers and effects .
Even if some other software would provide a similar set of features, "converting" a complex library would require a complete re-implementation of everything but the samples themselves.

TX16WX is cool and all, but it is based on a hardware sampler setup. It absolutely can not do a fraction of what is possible with Kontakt.
Doesn't mean it's bad, it's just a different beast.
For instance, you're never going to get the kind of legato scripting for orchestral libraries in TX16WX that are possible with Kontakt.

I’m also a Helm fan, but lately it’s been crashing Reaper (and Ableton) immediately on launch on both of my computers.. I wrote to Matt and he said he’s been seeing similar complaints and it’s likely due to it requiring support for an older version of OpenGL, which is unfortunately up to your video card’s driver and therefore can’t be added manually by the user. In my case, one is a pretty high end AMD card, and one is the Intel video built into a laptop.
Same problem with Dragonfly Reverb, which I suspect is related because like Helm, it crashes the DAW right as the GUI begins to load.

I would think any pure sfz player would be expected to play back the sfz instruments, that's what they are made for. But with a sampler like TX16Wx which suleiman mentioned, you can actually edit the samples, make new instruments and even convert existing libraries from one format to other. Not that the format selection would be big, but at least there are options and the native format is open.
Can you actually even play back sfz instruments with the Kontakt Player 6? There doesn't seem to be any settings for possible file formats or like. Manual link seems to be for the full Kontakt, not much help there.

"Player" only means "lacking editing functions". The instrument ("playing") function of an "xyz"-Sampler should be the same as those of an "xyz"-Player when loading the files the "Sampler" version of "xyz" saved.

Of course not, as it works on completely different file formats. The full (payed for) Kontakt version supposedly can somehow import the samples embedded in an sfz instrument file, but you need to redesign all appropriate parameters.
Maybe somebody created a converter tool, but I am not aware of such.

Well, according to old posts it has been possible at some point in the past...so they made it even more limited nowadays? That's fine for me, I only use it for the Sennheiser DrumMic'a. User made free content, scripts and alike don't mean much, you can only use that content for 15 minutes without restart.
At any rate, to me talk about VST instruments can definitely include samplers. They are not just one specific instrument, they can be any.

Hi Mario, I did go check out Project Sam- free orchestra and it was fantastic ---In one of my DAW's but it is not loading in Reaper when I pull Kontact up. Is there something different that I need to do? I loaded the license in native Instruments, etc..re scanned VST's and all kinds of things--but Project Sam just will not show. I haven't found anything that I'm 100% happy with. Even if the overall sound is good there's always a couple of dud notes (like all basses have..wolf tone etc).
I've just been doing some tracks with upright bass. What I do is load up 2 or 3 basses with duplicate MIDI part, render the audio of each, then comp the audio tracks. E.G. Bass 1 sounds pretty good but the low G sounds horrible, so I grab the G from bass 2.
I've also been doing this at the sample level with Kontakt and sfz format where I can get at the samples...compiling my own set of samples.
I still think the bass in Sonivox Eighty Eight is pretty good, sounds woody and natural, but some notes are dull.
I was pleasantly surprised that the (free) Bigcat VSTi version of the Versilian Orchestral bass (played pizz) has a gorgeous rich stringy woody sound (if that's what you like) suited to jazz, but it's very uneven and a couple of notes are real duds....alas can't get at the samples but it's a good candidate for comping. (The actual VSCO Kontakt version is much duller and too roomy even with no reverb).
Anyway, I don't know of any free upright (jazz etc) bass VSTi that might end up on Kenny's list, but hopefully someone does.

The sad thing is that for years I used the Sonivox DVI upright bass & loved it. Then Sonivox were bought out by one of the plugin vendors & no longer support any of the DVI stuff, so when my installation went belly up I was unable to get any kind of support at all. It took a lot of persistence but I did finally get an admission from the new owners as to what had happened & that they had no contact with the original dev & could not/would not fix my broken plug, even though I still had proof of purchase, security key etc. A lesson to be learned if you are considering buying any sonivox products, particularly the DVI series.

Goldreap, at the risk of hijacking this thread we may need to take this to DM's, but in case others are interested in your experience working with freeware acoustic bass VSTi's, can you provide a link to the BigCat instrument you referenced? Visiting their page, I see a few that are based on other orchestral packages (Sonatina, Iowa Orch, etc.) but not the VCSO version. Discontinued, maybe?

Many (all?) of Bigcat's VST instruments are now hosted by VST4Free. Good to have them in one place. It's 'VSCO2 Double Bass'. Notes 41(F) and 42(F#) are weird (the same sample I think) and the last few high notes F# up to C (same sample).

Same problem with Dragonfly Reverb, which I suspect is related because like Helm, it crashes the DAW right as the GUI begins to load.
Hey billybuck, I don't have a proper fix yet, but a few other people have reported this problem, and have found that they can avoid the crash if they run Reaper with the intel video hardware instead of the more powerful GPU. I'm hoping to make a new version of Dragonfly Reverb at some point that has no dependency on OpenGL, which should fix this problem, but I can't make any promises about when it will be available.

Even if some other software would provide a similar set of features, "converting" a complex library would require a complete re-implementation of everything but the samples themselves.

Yeah, the site is all japanese, but just go "instrument -> download button" and you're set. The installation is straightforward, just as everything in Sforzando, and there is a manual that describes all the articulations
It includes a .txt MIDI note map that works with Reaper, tho it lacks some of the options. I include one that I edited.

Yessir. Can't say if in complexity similar to Kontakt and JSFX because I haven't gone deep into neither, so I can only comment based on the products:
- Sample based instruments with round-robins, different articulations and custom GUIs with toneshaping options (the above japanese site I posted is a good example). Also, I have seem some guys implement humanization stuff.
- Internal effects engine (not top of the crop, but it exist)
- AFAIK, a couple of synths (no sample based) exist, tho is no the main use the format has received.
A disclaimer: since sfz is an open format, I guess most of the features I'm commenting are part of Plogue's own implementation for their Sforzando player, built around the ARIA engine.

I see that Synth1 is still widely used even today based on the recommendations above.
The only problem with it is the browsing, you have to audition every bank that is also limited to 128 presets, which can be distracting especially for composers who just want a certain sound.
I found this VST wrapper for Synth1, called Synth1 Librarian, created by a cool guy named NeutrinoSky. Here's his page: https://neutrinosky.com/
With a little initial configuring, you'll have a powerful search engine on top of Synth1 that lets you easily browse from your 15,000+ presets or so, and a whole lot more features. Free of course, though i believe the guy deserves some thanks.
EDIT: Oopsie.. I thought there was a Mac version for it. It fails Kenny's criteria. I'll keep this post here in case some Windows users might be interested to try it out.

Took a wild ass guess & copied the instruments folder to my C:\ Documents folder & that didnt work either. Where should I be putting the instruments?

Bigcat made these to be super easy to use and install. For Windows users, place the extracted .dll and .instruments together in your VSTi folder. For Mac users, place the extracted .component file in MacHD:/Libraries/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components.
I also have the free SFZ version of the whole orchestra (from Versilian Studios site) which includes the same bass (with the same problems I mentioned earlier).
I'm thinking I might try to edit the problem samples, or replace them or something...easy to do with sfz format.
how about we creat a google doc or something, with a column for if the download is free to download, requires an account/login, or works as a trial/demo, requires internet connection to install (can be downloaded and installed offline at any time later), requires iLok or other DRM, etc....
I really REALLY hate finding out a free plugin requires an account and login. I skip those right away. I just want to download, store and be able to install later at any point.
I am a sax player… Few weeks ago purchased EWI Akai5000.
After getting used to this “toy” and exploring build in sounds, I would like to expand it’s sound capabilities. I mean synth sounds. Have enough horn sounds (build in) for start.

Don't really bother to pay something... but it requires Reason. That cost ...

Thats exactly what I have installed in my C:\Program files\VST Plugins folder:
A folder called VSCO2_Double_Bass_V2_-_64 and inside that I have VSCO2 Double Bass - 64.instruments & VSCO2 Double Bass - 64.dll.
I also extracted the .msc file from inside the instruments folder & put that in the main folder. Still came up saying it couldnt find any instruments!

Not adding the usual suspects, as Surge, pg8x, sql8, etc.
AKAI MPC beats as a sampler controlled from Reaper rocks when you figure it out. Unfortunately the MIDI notes for triggering pads have to be reassigned to avoid insanity. They aren't sequential from scratch.
Blamsoft Viking VK1 is a very good VA emulation for classic sounds.

I love MPC Beats. Yeah, you have to map the MIDI notes and whatnot, but controlling it from Maschine MK2, MK3, Studio... very awesome. From my experience, they are sequential... usually from C1 up (chromatically), maps to all the Programs and Kits (included with the free factory content).
Since Maschine can also have encoder and button pages, you can assign the q-links to a couple pages, and the buttons to the modes, like Main, Sample Edit, Grid, etc. Really dig that.

This one is possibly the most exciting synth for me personally since Zebra 2. The basic version is free and comes with 25 wavetables and 75 presets, while several tiers of paid versions add on more waavetables and presets. There is also a limited number of text to wavetable conversions (I think 2 per day for the free version) which is unlocked with the higher tier paid versions. I've been using the free version since it came out and I'm about to start doing the subscription option. It is stupidly easy and amazing for sound design. Matt has made something so special that I can't imagine not paying something for it but he's been awesome enough to give folks essentially a fully functional free version.

Another NI FM synth is Kontour in Reaktor.
It's a very different beast to the DX7 type with only two operators but with lots of (more analogue like) sound shaping options which can be operated on the fly. Stephan Schmitt created a hardware synth from a development of the software to hardware DSP called Nonlinearlabs C15. This development removed all MIDI too so this is 100% designed purely for performance not programming.

Do you mean three oscillators? The free version has 25 wavetables. Did you try designing a sound or just play with the presets? This is definitely more of a sound designer's tool.

Cherry Audio's MG-1 is a VSTi emulation of the Moog-built Radio Shack Concertmate synth. If you're not familiar, you read that right. Rat Shack briefly sold a mono synth built by Moog. A nearby studio has one (a real one, not the VSTi) and it actually sounds great.

Is this a legit site? All VSTi's and VSt plugins are downloadable for free, but most of them look like commercial products to me.
Moreover, if you don't buy some kind of membership fee, download is unacceptably slow (the Rhodes Affair would take six and a half hours here). Paying a membership fee and getting cracked or not working software would leave me feeling scammed!

It's because only the drums are modelled, all the cymbals are sampled.
The modelling of the drums is really impressive, being able to change the hit area really brings life and realism to multiple hits and rolls, but unfortunately I don't like the sound of the cymbals, overheads and rooms so I'm sticking with Superior Drummer.

If its anything like Amplitube in the way they work it will download a lot of test/evaluation stuff too, if you buy stuff and enable then great if not it clogs yours pc up with unnecessary stuff

I'm a sucker for anything that sounds like a Hammond organ. I've been really loving the Hanon B70 free plug from Lostin70s.com. The midi mapping is hard wired though and I used a bunch of instances of JS: MIDI CC Mapper to route my CC sliders to the drawbars and knobs to the parameters I wanted.
Kenny, I wish I could have just copied what you did in one of your videos instead of stumbling through it on my own. I'd still be grateful for a video showing how to do this, particularly if my approach is not the best practice.

Yeah, cheers for the reminder, I read that a while back. Even with that knowledge 2-3GB drive space for the freebie version seems OTT. Others might like that blend - their mileage will vary!
I guess it seemed conceptually compromised to me already, before you add that big sample pack into the mix.

Nah, this kind of "free" stuff is more of a hassle than anything else. They take ridiculous amounts of space for what they do and usually come with a ridiculous copy protection. F*ck that.

AAS Chromaphone 2 and Lounge Lizard plugins, which are real physically modeled instruments, take 148 kb each and that includes the GUI (unfortunately they are more expensive than heavy in kb).

As for synths, my opinion is there is no need to hoard hundreds of them, just get Surge XT (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTvBgb4HGx0&t=6840s) and VITAL (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-dtKxwb3jw) and you are pretty much set for everything. Apart perhaps from a granular effect, there is not much more to ask for. These two are so vastly more powerful and sound so much better than anything else in the free scene (except for VCV rack but it's not a VST) it's not even funny. You get subtractive and FM synthesis with wavetables, all sorts of high quality effects, a plethora of filters, Surge even includes the OB-Xd filters. Surge even includes the OB-Xd filters.
It's more effective to spend time learning these two than looking for more synths that you'll never use anyway.
Sometimes, less is more.

Were you able to get Modo Drums to have separate tracks for each drum/crash etc. in Reaper?
I tried the "Insert Virtual Instrument on new track" & changing in the plug-in from Master to DAW 3-4, 5-6, etc. but in Reaper it's still all coming through the virtual instrument track.

Reaper is awesome but it currently lacks drum sounds so you need something like the popular and free Sforzando and some drum sounds in SFZ format or a more expensive VSTi. Best DAWS for MIDI Auditioning
This is a very common question. When working with vast MIDI libraries like ours, it's crucial to have some way of auditioning grooves quickly. This can be done in two ways:
1. a VSTi drum sampler with a loop browser
2. Music production software (DAW) with a loop browser
This post will now outline a few good alternatives to Reaper such as Cakewalk Sonar, Studio One and Cubase. The best DAWs include drum sounds, MIDI previewing, drum maps and are available in both Windows and Mac versions.
Cakewalk Sonar
I've been using Sonar since version 3 and still believe it's the best option for MIDI editing. While there is currently no Mac version, it's still worth mentioning. Per Cakewalk, a Mac version is in the works.
Sonar does include drum maps, drum sounds and what you get depends on the version you choose. We provide free Sonar drum maps in our products plus loops in MIDI "groove clip" format.
Cubase
Cubase is a very popular choice and while I don't use it, it does include drum sounds, MIDI preview, drum maps and it's available for both Mac and PC. As with Sonar, we provide free drum maps for Cubase in our products.
Studio One
Studio One is the other DAW I use regularly. To me, it's the easiest to use but its MIDI editing is way behind Sonar. Presonus offers a fully functioning FREE edition of Studio One and it includes drum sounds. There is one limitation with the free version: no VST support but other than that, it's truly free and fully functional. As with Sonar and Cubase, we offer Studio One drum maps in our products.

I'm about to prepare a video series featuring all the FREE VST Instruments that are available for REAPER.
The only limitation is that they have to work with Mac and PC and they have to be really FREE. No free trials etc.
They also need to be somewhat stable.

+1 for the TAL freebies. Really easy to use and good quality.
I think Noisemaker is a good plugin for people new to synths.

Really great emulations of more obscure but great sounding synths, and a low CPU hit.
I'm about to prepare a video series featuring all the FREE VST Instruments that are available for REAPER.
The only limitation is that they have to work with Mac and PC and they have to be really FREE. No free trials etc.
They also need to be somewhat stable.

And oh, if this includes free Kontakt libraries as well, there are plenty of great ones to recommend :D . But so far all recommendations have been actual VST plugins as requested.
Kontakt instruments could be their own series, imo?

Kenny, you'll find yourself swamped in no time with synth and samplers suggestions :)
The problem is with synth drums and grooves.
For acoustic I find Steven Slate Drums 5.5 very good, but I'm not sure about good drum free VSTis (with presets and libraries attached).

I'd never use my main email for any vendor that doesn't require my actual ID for credit card billing, especially since I don't want the constant emails. I've always created vendor accounts using a different email, with a nickname. That's been good enough for more reaper beats Free Activators plugins over the years than I could count, and they can do whatever they want with the account. I thought everyone did it that way :) If I purchase software online I use my real info but not my main correspondence email, a "vendors and bills only" email instead.
I don't know why anyone would create an account that had stipulations with them, either because it's their main email or the account doesn't disappear when deleted, in order to glom free software.

It's free software, and we don't have to download it. I always assume they're trading the software for the info.

Bitsonic Keyzone someone mentioned. Downloading was weird. The yamaha and steinway are incredibly well sampled, no noise or artifacts that I can tell so far, nice stereo image. The reverb is pretty good and matches the reaper beats Free Activators. The Rhodes is great too, but the reverb doesn't go as well with the rhodes. I just use dry and send to Reaverb

Thanks I’ll have to check out piano one. So far I’m very impressed with the sound of the hammers on the lightly touched high notes on keyzone, and it’s pretty simple plugin with brain dead UI. Also it sounds like the samples were recorded very cleanly in good environment and gain staging yet the piano doesn’t sound tuned to absolute perfection, so maybe that’s what I like. I don’t like that reverb is on by default though, I hate that with all VI’s though so no surprise there.

Even if some other software would provide a similar set of features, "converting" a complex library would require a complete re-implementation of everything but the samples themselves.

TX16WX is cool and all, but it is based on a hardware sampler setup. It absolutely can not do a fraction of what is possible with Kontakt.
Doesn't mean it's bad, it's just a different beast.
For instance, you're never going to get the kind of legato scripting for orchestral libraries 4K Video Downloader TX16WX that are possible with Kontakt.

I've been tricking people with a combination of Jamstix and any other drum samplers for a good time. Even my drummer thought I paid someone reaper beats Free Activators play in one of my songs :)

I wrote to Matt and he said he’s been seeing similar complaints and it’s likely due to it requiring support for an older version of OpenGL, reaper beats Free Activators, which is unfortunately up to your video card’s driver and therefore can’t be added manually by the user. In my case, one is a pretty high end AMD card, and one is the Intel video built into a laptop.
Same problem with Dragonfly Reverb, which I suspect is related because like Helm, it crashes the DAW right as the GUI begins to load.

The Kontakt Player can do MUCH more than any existing sfz -player.
I would think any pure sfz player would be expected to play back the sfz instruments, that's what they are made for. But with a sampler like TX16Wx which suleiman mentioned, you can actually edit the samples, make new instruments and even convert existing libraries from one format to other, reaper beats Free Activators. Not that the format selection would be big, but at least there are options and the native format is open.
Can you actually even play back sfz instruments with the Kontakt Player 6? There doesn't seem to be any settings for possible file formats or like. Manual link seems to be for the full Kontakt, not much help there.

"Player" only means "lacking editing functions". The instrument ("playing") function of an "xyz"-Sampler should be the same as those of an "xyz"-Player when loading the files the "Sampler" version of "xyz" saved.
This discussion is about "VST instruments" hence only the "player" functionality is of interest here.
Can you actually even play back sfz instruments with the Kontakt Player 6?
Of course not, as it works on completely different file formats. The full (payed for) Kontakt version supposedly can somehow import the samples embedded in an sfz instrument file, reaper beats Free Activators, but you need to redesign all appropriate parameters.
Maybe somebody created a converter tool, but I am not aware of such, reaper beats Free Activators.

Well, according to old posts it has been possible at some point in the past.so they made it even more limited nowadays? That's fine for me, I only use it for the Sennheiser DrumMic'a. User made free content, scripts and reaper beats Free Activators don't mean much, you can only use that content for 15 minutes without restart.
At any rate, to me talk about VST instruments can definitely include samplers. They are not just one specific instrument, they can be any.

Hi Mario, I did go check out Project Sam- free orchestra and it was fantastic ---In one of my DAW's but it is not loading in Reaper when I pull Kontact up, reaper beats Free Activators. Is there something different that I need to do? I loaded the license in native Instruments, etc.re scanned VST's and all kinds of things--but Project Sam just will not show. Any help will be greatly appreciated

I haven't found anything that I'm 100% happy with. Even kaspersky rescue disk 2018 download the overall sound is good there's always a couple of dud notes zemana antimalware crack free download Free Activators all basses have.wolf tone etc).
I've just been doing some tracks with upright bass. What I do is load up 2 or 3 basses with duplicate MIDI part, render the audio of each, then comp the audio tracks. E.G. Bass 1 sounds pretty good but the low G sounds horrible, so I grab the G from bass 2.
I've also been doing this at the sample level with Kontakt and sfz format where I can get at the samples.compiling my own set of samples.
I still think the bass in Sonivox Eighty Eight is pretty good, sounds woody and natural, but some notes are dull.
I was pleasantly surprised that the (free) Bigcat VSTi version of the Versilian Orchestral bass (played pizz) has a gorgeous rich stringy woody sound (if that's what you like) suited to jazz, but reaper beats Free Activators very uneven and a couple of notes are real duds.alas can't get at the samples but it's a good candidate for comping. (The actual VSCO Kontakt version is much duller and too roomy even with no reverb).
Anyway, I don't know of any free upright (jazz etc) bass VSTi that might end up on Kenny's list, but hopefully someone does.

The sad thing is that for years I used the Sonivox DVI upright bass & loved it. Then Sonivox were bought out by one of the plugin vendors & no longer support any of the DVI stuff, so when my installation went belly up I was unable to get any kind of support at all. It took a lot of persistence but I did finally get an admission from the new owners as to what had happened & that they had no contact with the original dev & could not/would not fix my broken plug, even though I still had proof of purchase, security key etc. A lesson to be learned if you are considering buying any sonivox products, particularly the DVI series.

Goldreap, at the risk of hijacking this thread we may need to take this to DM's, but in case others are interested in your experience working with freeware acoustic bass VSTi's, can you provide a link to the BigCat instrument you referenced? Visiting their page, I see a few that are based on other orchestral packages (Sonatina, Iowa Orch, etc.) but not the VCSO version. Discontinued, maybe?

Many (all?) of Bigcat's VST instruments are now hosted by VST4Free, reaper beats Free Activators. Good to have them in one place. It's 'VSCO2 Double Bass'. Notes 41(F) and 42(F#) are weird (the same sample I think) and the last few high notes F# up to C (same sample).

Hey billybuck, I don't have a proper fix yet, but a few other people have reported this problem, and have found that they can avoid the crash if they run Reaper with the intel video hardware instead of the more powerful GPU. I'm hoping to make a new version of Dragonfly Reverb at some point that has no dependency on OpenGL, which should fix this problem, but I can't make any promises about when it will be available.

Even if some other software would provide a similar set of features, "converting" a complex library would require a complete re-implementation of everything but the samples themselves.

Yessir. Can't say if in complexity similar to Kontakt and JSFX because I haven't gone deep into neither, so I can only comment based on the products:
- Sample based instruments with round-robins, different articulations and custom GUIs with toneshaping options (the above japanese site I posted is a good example). Also, I have seem some guys implement humanization stuff.
- Internal effects engine (not top of the crop, but it exist)
- AFAIK, a couple of synths (no sample based) exist, tho is no the main use the format has received.
A disclaimer: since sfz is an open format, I guess most of the features I'm commenting are part of Plogue's own implementation for their Sforzando player, built around the ARIA engine.

I see that Synth1 is still widely used even today based on the recommendations above.
The only problem with it is the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite Crack, you have to audition every bank that is also limited to 128 presets, which can be distracting especially for composers who just want a certain sound.
I found this VST wrapper for Synth1, called Synth1 Librarian, created by a cool guy named NeutrinoSky, reaper beats Free Activators. Here's his page: https://neutrinosky.com/
With a little initial reaper beats Free Activators, you'll have a powerful search engine on top of Synth1 that lets you easily browse from your 15,000+ presets or so, and a whole lot more features. Free of course, though i believe the guy deserves some thanks.
EDIT: Oopsie. I thought there was a Mac version for it, reaper beats Free Activators. It fails Kenny's criteria. I'll keep this post here in case some Windows users might be interested to try it out.

Took a wild ass guess & copied the instruments folder to my C:\ Documents folder & that didnt work either. Where should I be putting the instruments?

Bigcat made these to be super easy to use and install. For Windows users, place the extracted .dll and .instruments together in your VSTi folder. For Mac users, place the extracted .component file in MacHD:/Libraries/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components.
I also have the free SFZ version of the whole orchestra (from Versilian Studios site) which includes the same bass (with the same problems I mentioned earlier).
I'm thinking I might try to edit the problem samples, or replace them or something.easy to do with sfz format.

Thats exactly what I have installed in my C:\Program files\VST Plugins folder:
A folder called VSCO2_Double_Bass_V2_-_64 and inside that I have VSCO2 Double Bass - 64.instruments & VSCO2 Double Bass - 64.dll.
I also extracted the .msc file from inside the instruments folder & put that in the main folder, reaper beats Free Activators. Still came up saying it couldnt find any instruments!

Not adding the usual suspects, as Surge, pg8x, sql8, etc.
AKAI MPC beats as a sampler controlled from Reaper rocks when you figure it out. Unfortunately the MIDI notes for triggering pads have to be reassigned to avoid insanity. They aren't sequential from scratch.
Blamsoft Viking VK1 is a very good VA emulation for classic sounds.

I love MPC Beats. Yeah, you have to map the MIDI notes and whatnot, but controlling it from Maschine MK2, MK3, Studio. very awesome. From my experience, they are sequential. usually from C1 up (chromatically), reaper beats Free Activators, maps to all the Programs and Kits (included with the free factory content).
Since Maschine can also have encoder and button pages, you can assign the q-links reaper beats Free Activators a couple pages, and the buttons to the modes, like Main, Sample Edit, Grid, etc. Really dig that.

This one is possibly the most exciting synth for me personally since Zebra 2. The basic version is free and comes with 25 wavetables and 75 presets, while several tiers of paid versions add on more waavetables and presets. There is also a limited number of text to wavetable conversions (I think 2 per day for the reaper beats Free Activators version) which is unlocked with the higher tier paid versions. I've been using the free version since it came out and I'm about to start doing the subscription option. It is stupidly easy and amazing for sound design. Matt has made something so special that I can't imagine not paying something for it but he's been awesome enough to give folks essentially a fully functional free version.

Another NI FM synth is Kontour in Reaktor.
It's a very different beast to the DX7 type with only two operators but with lots of (more analogue like) sound shaping options which can be operated on the fly. Stephan Schmitt created a hardware synth from a development of the software to hardware DSP called Nonlinearlabs C15. This development removed all MIDI too so this is 100% designed purely for performance not programming.

Do you mean three oscillators? The free version has 25 wavetables. Did you try designing a sound or just play with the presets? This is definitely more of a sound designer's tool.

I have one more that I haven't tried yet but it comes highly recommended (via a mutual friend) by Tom Brislin, currently with Kansas.
Cherry Audio's MG-1 is a VSTi emulation of the Moog-built Radio Shack Concertmate synth. If you're not familiar, you read that right. Rat Shack briefly sold a mono synth built by Moog. A nearby studio has one (a real one, not the VSTi) and it actually sounds great.

I'm a sucker for anything that sounds like a Hammond organ. I've been really loving the Hanon B70 free plug from Lostin70s.com. The midi mapping is hard wired though and I used a bunch of instances of JS: MIDI CC Mapper to route my CC sliders to the drawbars and knobs to the parameters I wanted.
Kenny, I wish Reaper beats Free Activators could have just copied what you did in one of your videos instead of stumbling through it on my own. I'd still be grateful for a video showing how to do this, particularly if my approach is not the best practice.

AAS Chromaphone 2 and Lounge Lizard plugins, which are real physically modeled instruments, take 148 kb each and that includes the GUI (unfortunately they are more expensive than heavy in kb).

Apart perhaps from a granular effect, there is not much more to ask for. These two are so vastly more powerful and sound so much better than anything else in the free scene (except for VCV rack but it's not a VST) it's not even funny, reaper beats Free Activators. You get subtractive and FM synthesis with wavetables, all sorts of high quality effects, a plethora of filters, Surge even includes the OB-Xd filters. Surge even includes the OB-Xd filters.
It's more effective to spend time learning these two than looking for more synths that you'll never use reaper beats Free Activators Sometimes, less is more.

I tried the "Insert Virtual Instrument on new track" & changing in the plug-in from Master to DAW 3-4, 5-6, etc. but in Reaper it's still all coming through the virtual instrument powerarchiver 2017 registration code.

Poise was released back in 2011 with a $49 price tag. Marketed as a clutter-free drum sampler plugin, Poise was praised for its clean MPC-style control layout and unmatched workflow efficiency. You can now download it completely free of charge from the One Small Clue website and use it in your favorite DAW.

Back in 2011, many industry-standard sampler plugins offered more features compared to Poise, but none of them could match its simplicity. One Small Clue’s plugin provided all the core functionality required for drum programming and beat making in a DAW, without the burden of having to include every possible feature. Poise doesn’t offer many built-in effects, but the basics are there. It has a multi-mode filter, a distortion effect, and a ring modulator. You can’t use multiple effects simultaneously. The ESL-110 plugin samples and emulates the classic BOSS DR-110 drum machine.

It has independent modules for Bass Drum, Snare Drum, O HiHat, C HiHat, Cymbal, Hand Clap with Reverb/Decay, Volume and Pan controls for each.
You can get ESL-110 for Windows (32- and 64-bit) as well as a Mac VST or AU.
It sounds suitably cheesy as you might expect, but with some tweaking you can get some cool sounds for sure.

Vintage Drum Elements is a virtual drum machine. It emulates the sound of a Yamaha RX-5.
This plugin could work well for synthwave, synthpop and other retro 80s genres.

Use Reaper to create an always‑on recorder that captures all the inspiration, but none of the chit‑chat.

Remember those spontaneous performances when everybody is relaxing during the break, or those moments of inspiration that come while you're auditioning one of 300 synth patches? It's a fair bet you weren't recording when they happened — so wouldn't it be great to have a recorder that's always on, ensuring that you never miss an opportunity again?
When DAT tape became a cheap recording method, I got into the habit of always leaving a DAT machine in record, patched across the mix bus, whenever a session was taking place. In addition to proving an interesting archive of all of the studio chat, it provided a backup recording of the performances that happened in between takes. There were many times when the 'always running' live recording managed to capture creative ideas and inspirations and, on a few occasions, these moments even made it to the final CD.
In this article, I'll show you how to use Reaper's 'Save live output to disk' feature so that you can capture these moments of inspiration whenever they happen, using your own 'always‑on' recorder. First, to set up background recording, select File / Save live output to disk (bounce) or use the disk snapshot de shortcut Ctrl-Alt-B.
All of the 'Save live output to disk' options are available from one window, which offers a surprising number of background recording options. We'll start with the basic settings.
Output Formats
The first thing you need to decide on is the output format. By default, the background recording runs at 24‑bit in WAV format, but you can change this to any of the uncompressed or lossless formats that are supported by Reaper.
In The Background
When you're ready reaper beats Free Activators start recording, click the Start button. The window will disappear and any audio that passes through the master bus will be recorded to the selected file. You'll soon forget all about the recording that's happening in the background.

In the example, the final file runs for just on two minutes, even though the 'Save live output to disk' option was enabled for over half an hour. Using the 'Don't save when below' option generated quite a small file from over 30 minutes of recording.

Best DAWS for MIDI Auditioning
This is a very common question. When working with vast MIDI libraries like ours, it's crucial to have some way of auditioning grooves quickly. This can be done in two ways:
1. a VSTi drum sampler with a loop browser
2. Music production software (DAW) with a loop browser
This post will now outline a few good alternatives to Reaper such as Cakewalk Sonar, Studio One and Cubase. The best DAWs include drum sounds, MIDI previewing, drum maps and are available in both Windows and Mac versions.
Cakewalk Sonar
I've been using Sonar since version 3 and still believe it's the best option for MIDI editing. While there is currently no Mac version, it's still worth mentioning. Per Cakewalk, a Mac version is in the works.
Sonar does include drum maps, drum sounds and what you get depends on the version you choose. We provide free Sonar drum maps in our products plus loops in MIDI "groove clip" format.
Cubase
Cubase is a very popular choice and while I don't use it, it does include drum sounds, MIDI preview, drum maps and it's available for both Mac and PC. As with Sonar, we provide free drum maps for Cubase in our products.
Studio One
Studio One is the other DAW I use regularly. To me, reaper beats Free Activators, it's the easiest to use but its MIDI editing is way behind Sonar. Presonus offers a fully functioning FREE edition of Studio One and it includes drum sounds.
