Disk-based backup

Disk-based backup refers to technology that allows one to back up large amounts of data disk snapshot de a disk storage unit. It is the technology which is often supplemented by tape drives for data archival or replication to another facility for disaster recovery. Additionally, backup-to-disk has several advantages over traditional tape backup for both technical and business reasons. With continued improvements in storage devices to provide faster access and higher storage capacity,[1] a prime consideration for backup and restore operations, backup-to-disk will become more prominent in organizations.[2]

Technical Advantages[edit]

There are technical advantages to backup-to-disk technology.[citation needed] One of the main advantages is the speed at which backups can be performed to the disk appliance. Backing up data to a backup-to-disk technology can be up to four times faster than traditional SCSI tape devices. While the new Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) connected tape drives are faster than the original tape drives, the disk snapshot de appliance is still faster than most tape technologies. These faster backup times lead to shorter backup windows allowing the technology to backup the data while in a smaller amount of time thus increasing the window for processing which is also a benefit for the business.[3]

Another advantage that backup-to-disk offers is data deduplication and compression. The disk appliances offer either de-duplication at the source or at the destination. The deduplication at the destination is faster and requires less performance overhead on the source host. The deduplication requires less disk space on the disk appliance as it stores only one copy of the possible multiple copies of one file on the network.

Many of the backup-to-disk technologies advertise up to 15 to 1 compression ratios. This also allows the information technology department to store more data on less disk space. With deduplication a disk appliance with 5 terabytes of raw disk space can store as much as 30 terabytes of compressed and de-duplicated data.

Business Advantages[edit]

Disaster Recovery[edit]

The most important advantage that backup-to-disk provides for the business, disk snapshot de, and for the technology department, is faster recovery of the data. Most businesses today have several terabytes of data that the business must be able to retain in the event of a disaster. This disaster can be as simple as server hardware failures to as severe as a regional disaster, such as a natural disaster. For the localized disaster the disk appliance allows the technology department to hold one or two weeks of backups, depending on the size of the disk appliance and the amount of data being backup, disk snapshot de, which allows for very quick recovery.

Business Continuity[edit]

Preparation for disaster requires the creation of an organizational Business Continuity Plan (BCP). The BCP describes the guidelines for system continuity and recoverability. Disk based backups facilitate rapid system recovery. A backup-to-disk system can replicate data backups to a device at another location. This can be beneficial if disk snapshot de organization has designated the location as the recovery site. Backup-to-disk technology can greatly benefit an organization in continuing to do business if a disaster damages facilities and technology.

Products[edit]

There are several Disk Backup solutions on the market today. Below are a few of the industry leading devices.

Dell EMC[edit]

Dell EMC offers two disk backup devices. The Data Domain device, which EMC acquired from Data Domain in 2009.[4] The Data Domain device de-duplicates the data at the destination, which reduces the overhead on the host. With throughput up to 68 TB/hour, Data Domain systems make it possible to complete more backups in less time and provide faster, more reliable restores. The Data Domain Operating System (DD OS) is the intelligence behind Data Domain systems that makes them the industry’s most reliable and cloud-enabled protection storage.

The second Dell EMC offering is Avamar: this unit de-duplicates data at the source via an agent on the host which offers savings on bandwidth utilization during backup.[5]

Both of these units offer site-to-site replication.

HPE[edit]

Hewlett Packard Enterprise(HPE) offers data storage backup with its HPE StoreOnce portfolio. HPE StoreOnce can be offered as a virtual storage appliance (VSA) or a disk based hardware appliance. The StoreOnce VSA is licensed at 4 TB, 10 TB and 50 TB capacity points and can be deployed on any x86 Industry Standard Server with certain specification requirements. The disk based StoreOnce Backup appliances have six models ranging from a StoreOnce 3100 (5.5TB usable) to a StoreOnce 6500 (1.7PB usable).[6]

HPE StoreOnce with HPE StoreOnce Catalyst is the only federated deduplication solution, and it provides disk-based backup for IT environments, from the smallest remote sites to the largest enterprises. You can reduce the amount of space needed to store backup disk snapshot de by 95% and choose between powerful dedicated appliances for larger offices and data centers, and flexible virtual appliances for smaller and remote offices.[7]

Quantum[edit]

Quantum offers several models for disk backup solutions. The DXi-V series is disk snapshot de entry-level unit that stores from 1-2TB of data. The midrange level units are the DXi4000 and DXI6000series, while the enterprise level unit is the DXi8500.

All of the offerings from Quantum have de-duplication, compression, and remote site replication.[8]

Rdiff-backup[edit]

Rdiff-backup is an open source product that provides reverse-delta disk-to-disk backups.

Rsync-incremental[edit]

Rsync-incremental is not a product per se but rather a technique using the open source program rsync with the—link-dest parameter. This functionality is very similar to Time Machine on macOS.

Time Machine[edit]

On macOS, Time Machine provides a disk-to-disk backup solution to create incremental backups of files that can be restored at later dates.

How to Restore a Server Disk Using disk snapshot de Backup

In this tutorial, you will learn how to quickly and easily restore disk backups on your Server subscription.

A backup is a copy of data made in case data is lost and needs to be recovered. This tutorial explains how to restore disks linked to services like a remote desktop or a server.

The current backup options consist of the following:

  • Default backups of server disks based on a pre-set (non-editable) frequency on the same CPD as the service:
    • Every hour [previous 5 hours]
    • Every day [previous 14 days at 00:10]
    • Every week [previous 8 weeks – Sundays at 00:15]
  • Manualbackups. These are optional security copies, snapshots of the disk, that can be made weekly (for up to a maximum of 30 weeks) through the IaaS orchestration platform.

The process to restore either of these backups is the same. This tutorial shows how to restore a disk regardless of the type of backup used.

Sample to backup Managed Disks to another region using incremental snapshots
managed-disks-dotnet-backup-with-incremental-snapshots

Incremental snapshots provide differential capability – a unique capability available only in Azure Managed Disks. It enables customers and independent solution vendors (ISV) to build backup and disaster recovery solutions for Managed Disks. It allows you to get the changes between two snapshots of the same disk, thus copying only changed data between two snapshots across regions, reducing time and cost for backup and disaster recovery. Read more about incremental snapshots here

In this sample, we demonstrate the following:

  • How to fetch incremental snapshots created for a disk in an Azure resource group
  • How to generate shared access signature (SAS) URI for a snapshot for getting the changes since the last snapshot
  • How to download the first incremental snapshot as a base blob in another region.
  • How to copy only the changes since the last snapshot to the base blob.
  • How to create snapshots on the base blob after the changes are copied. These snapshots represent your point in time backup of the disk in another region.

How to Create a Full System Backup and Bootable Windows Image Backups

In order to backup an entire hard drive, all you need to do is select the source disk and the target. Note that BackupChain supports MBR as well as GPT layouts and handles those automatically.

What is a disk image and what is a disk clone? A disk clone is a 1:1 copy of a disk on another disk, so that the clone can be used immediately to replace the original hard drive. An image backup is a file containing the contents of a disk. When you restore from total loss, you will need to copy the disk image contents to the new drive. A cloned hard disk, however, is already cloned so it’s ready to go. The steps below are for the disk imaging option. If instead you wanted to clone a hard disk, you would select another disk as a target.

In order to create a full system disk backup that contains the entire hard drive in a single disk image file, disk snapshot de, select ‘target is a disk image file’ in the screen shown below:

Immediate Recovery: Boot from Backup or Mount Backup Image

Disk images can be mounted directly disk snapshot de Windows or accessed via BackupChain’s main screen. In addition, instantaneous recovery is possible by simply creating a new virtual machine and linking it to the disk image file/s created by BackupChain. You can then immediately boot up the VM directly from the image backup folder. Many users set up a backup server with VMware or Hyper-V and share out a folder where other servers place their disk images. A set of virtual machines is already prepared and linked to the disk image files, ready to go. If any of the production servers go down, disk snapshot de, a single click boots the VM directly in Hyper-V on the backup server.

Use BackupChain Disk Backup for a Complete Server Backup

In order to be able to move your Windows installation and all applications to another disk or completely new hardware, you need to either clone the hard drive or run a full Windows system backup. Disk image backup can be used to create a full backup of a disk, sector-by-sector, with all of its contents that is stored as a single file. A system backup backs up the partition layout, boot sectors, relevant IDs, and hidden and encrypted disk areas as well. Traditional file backup tools do not cover these areas and are hence not suited for backing up entire operating systems, disk snapshot de. On the other hand, however, file backup software performs generally better than disk backup when backing up data disks.
Disk backup and Image Backup in Detail
BackupChain offers disk to disk backup, also known as disk cloning, as well as disk image backup. Disk image backup creates an image disk snapshot de from the contents of your disk, which usually only holds the actual data on the disk. Free space is usually skipped; however, all other relevant information necessary for a full system backup is contained in the image file.
BackupChain converts physical and remote disks, for example, iSCSI, to virtual disk formats that may be used to access disk data immediately. You can use virtual disks to boot the system as a virtual machine immediately without a restore operation. Virtual disks may be mounted and files and folders can be extracted selectively when necessary, without having to restore the entire disk.
BackupChain supports 4KB sector and disks over 2 TB. The following formats are supported: VHD, VHDX, disk snapshot de, VDI, and VMDK. VHD and VHDX files can be booted in various virtualization platforms, such as Hyper-V. VMDK disk images can be booted VMware while VDI disk snapshot de the format used for VirtualBox.
In case your Windows system disk fails, disk snapshot de, there are several recovery options available:

  • You can copy the virtual disk back to a physical disk of equal or larger size
  • You can mount the virtual disk and access the files and folders you need
  • You can instantly boot from the virtual disk in one of your favorite virtual hosts: Hyper-V, VMware Workstation, ESX, or VMware Player, VirtualBox, and others.

Disk Image Backup Versioning

BackupChain applies versioning on disk image files so that it automatically deletes the oldest disk image when a new one is added. All disk images are immediately accessible from the backup folder.

Entire HDD Backups of Windows, Applications, and Data Disks

BackupChain prepares all services in Windows for live backup, such as SQL Server and Exchange Server. This signal ensures all application have the opportunity to bring their data structures into a consistent state before the backup snapshot is taken. In additional to taking full windows system images, you can also image data disks as well, which in some cases may be faster and more convenient than traditional file backup.

How to Back Up a RAID Disk Array

Hardware RAID disk arrays appear to BackupChain usually as a single large disk. BackupChain can back up the RAID disk array and restore it into a single larger disk in the future if necessary. Just like backups of individual drives, RAID disk images can be mounted, accessed, booted from, and restored in the same fashion.
BackupChain also supports taking drive image backups of Windows Software RAID arrays. Groups of dynamic disk can be snapshot simultaneously and backed up into separate virtual disks. The disk snapshot de disks can in turn be mounted to another system or virtual machine, disk snapshot de, or copied back to physical disks at some future time.

Application Consistent HDD Backups

Application consistency is the “gold” standard of backups, disk snapshot de. Application consistency is achieved by BackupChain notifying all live backup capable services on your computer before a hard drive snapshot is taken. This ensures that all applications have a chance to write their data to disk in a consistent manner before the disk is read. Moreover, when the disk image is booted the services know how to continue work from the point they left off.
The next best scenario is a crash-consistent backup, which is similar to recovering from a power loss event. The disk data is consistent in time, since no blocks were altered while the disk was read; however, the applications did not have a chance to write out their data structures. Most modern services are capable of repairing their disk data structures upon such an event by rolling back transactions. For example, Microsoft SQL Server, Exchange Server, and NTFS all use transactions to rollback interrupted operations without risking data corruption.

Disk to Disk Backup and Disk Cloning versus Disk Imaging

Disk to disk backup may be also a good add-on to your backup strategy. While a disk image backup of an operating system disk is efficient and can be booted as a virtual machine, disk to disk snapshot de backup allows immediate recovery in case of a disk failure, disk snapshot de. When you create a disk copy using BackupChain, the disk is immediately accessible when needed without additional steps. A simple reboot and change in the BIOS suffices to switch the boot process to use the cloned disk.

Advantages of Disk-Based Backup Solutions

Disk-based backup solutions are generally faster and cheaper than tape backups. Unlike file backups, the disk image created contains all the sectors needed to boot Windows in case of a total loss. In addition, the cost of backup disks is steadily decreasing, making disk drive backups much more feasible than other options in terms of cost per terabyte.

Beyond Hard Disk Drive Backups

As an all-in-one PC and server backup software package, BackupChain offers much more than disk imaging, such as backup for Hyper-V VMs, backup for VMware VMs, SQL Server backup, VirtualBox backup, version backup, cloud backup, FTP backup, and much more.
Above all, our goal is to give the IT professional a comprehensive backup solution that gives total control over data, disk snapshot de, how it’s being processed, disk snapshot de, and abelssoft checkdrive reliable backup engine that tracks and verifies every single backup operation performed.
